hi . im looking to add some extra horses to liven things up a bit . as far as i know my zed is standard . cat exhaust , stock air filter , dont think shes been chipped . not looking to build a monster but would like to get her up in the big 360-370 bhp range . any suggestions as to an order to change things to get best results . also maybe a guide to rough cost of mod parts and ease or difficulty of doing them .

one final ask is by adding an extra 60 or 70 horses how will it affect things like reliability , drivability and economy of the car .

cheers in advance for your suggestions

andy

ps . should finally have some pics on over the weekend . had the respray done today.

Providing you do everything correctly, reliability shouldn't be an issue. How are your brakes? Might need to check those out first.

As for the engine, make sure it's in tip top condition and that all the sensors are working correctly and within range (a simple hook up to conzult will tell you whether your MAF, O2 sensors etc are all good). Make sure your turbos are holding boost well and are not tired and smokey. Might be worth doing a compression test also (although Conzult's power balance test will give you a rough indication as to cylinder condition). Then, time for a good service making sure you fit the cooler NGK spark plugs. Then, get yourself a good quality air filter. A'pexi are the best proven filters on the market for the Z32. Did you say your exhaust was completely stock? Ditch that. Reasonable cat back exhausts can be had on ebay for as little as 350 quid.

Next, you'll need a chip to increase fueling. If you don't do this, on higher boost, you'll suffer detonation problems/running lean and will ultimately screw your pistons. JeffTT, DTA or John Dixon will be able to sort you out with this. Now, you're ready to increase the boost. You can do this one of two ways. By fitting mig tips inside your boost pipes to force the actuators to open further or by fitting a boost controller.

Boost controllers are better. They'll reduce boost spikes to a minimum and they are more controllable.

Things to avoid as they are pointless : Iridium plugs, dump valves, removing your cats UNLESS your turbos are good.

Your car will feel noticeably quicker and will sound better, but will have little effect on how well it drives on the road. You'll of course notice an increase in fuel consumption, especially when boosting.

my exhaust isnt standard . it still has the cats but is a power flo i think from there on back .

with the filters is it a striaght old one off and new one on or will settings have to be tweeked to allow for the extra suction .

Nope, that's what the MAF is for. All it does is allow the car to breath slightly better. Always best off resetting your ECU by unplugging the battery for a while to clear the self-taught map.

Well, a powerflow is marginally better than the stock exhaust.....just. Least you'll loose some of the restrictions.

Fitting the filter requires removal of the stock filter box. It's a bit of an arse to get off, but just takes some wiggling! The A'pexi filter is designed for the Z32 and simply screws on to the MAF.

^ Funky's spot on - be careful of ebay 'universal fit' Apexi filters as in my experience they don't bloody fit properly! the traders on here should be able to source a propor one, although recently there has been a worldwide shortage of the things. if you're upping boost then a decent aftermarket boost gauge is useful - not required with most electronic controllers though as they'll display current boost level, but vital if youre going the boost jet route.

regarding the boost controller , im a bit green . is one better than an other . how much is a decent 1 and what can i expect to pay to get it fitted and set up .

All depends on budget mate and what style you want to go for. Personally I prefer the look of the smaller and more old skool EBCs as opposed to the large ungainly looking expensive ones that clutter up the dash.
