Dear Z lovers,

This is my second Z, a 98 TT pearl white import perfect condition. The ride has been lowered by just more than an inch. The turbos were reconditioned just before the car was imported and I am the first uk owner (only one owner in japan).

The problem is that in 2nd and 4th gears there is a 'whooshing' sound coming from somewhere (sounds like under the gearstick). I have considered that this is the turbos but I am not sure, because as i said this only happens in 2nd and 4th gear. Others have driven my car and said that everything feels good, but also do not know what the noise is.

Any suggestions please would be really welcome, thanks in advance guys.

Sounds like the shift rubbers have split. Change those first before going any further. When they split, any noise from the gearbox that would normally be muffled becomes audible. 2nd and 4th are the ones that you can hear when the rubber boots perish.

Yep, as Si said, its very likely the rubber gaitors are simply split. If the split is at the front then when the gear lever is angled backwards (ie 2nd and 4th gear) the split is opened up. Its suprising just how much sound these rubber gaitors block from the drivetrain.

You will need to :

- Remove the Stereo surround console (2 screws at top under plastic covers and 2 screws below air vents under the plastic strip), Clipped in at bottom.

- This will give you access to remove the centre console around the gear lever (2 screws at top. and another under the Ashtray). Clipped in on one side.

- Remove gearknob. Screws off, can be extremely tight on some cars.

and underneath you will find the two Rubber gaitors.

Hi guys, thank you so much for the advice, I will do that soon and report back wether it has been successful or not.

Thanks again,

Vic

Check your gear shift bushes while you are there, you may need new ones (test by wobbling the gear stick whilst in gear it should not move much from left to right, if it moves then you may want to replace, if it feels like it's in nuteral, you're well past your sell by date :) ).

Makes a massive difference to the way gear changes feel.
