Look in Yell.com local to you under "Car Air Conditioning" and look for garages that advertise "Re-gas"

If you still have the old system, which uses the R12 you will have to get it converted to take the new gas.

"Heres a copy of something i found a while ago on another site

OK heres the rub. Lots I dont know but car air con I do. In simple terms. Old cars (pre 1994 ish) R12 refrigerant (now illegal) and schraeder type valves with a non compatible oil. New cars (post 1994) R134a and quick release fittings with PAG oil.

Even if you change the fittings you can't just put R134a in the system for two reasons. 1st it runs at a higher pressure (pressure also directly relates to temperature) so the amount of refrigerant installed must be reduced. Also the old old oil will not mix with R134a so will starve the sytem of vital oil and seize the compressor.

So the way to do it properly is

Recover the R12 and dispose of properly.

Remove compressor and drain oil. Re-fill with an esther oil which will allow any remianing oil to mix with the new refrigerant and keep components lubricated, re-fit compressor.

Fit new quick release adaptors

Re-fill system with 30% less R134a than it would normally take in R12

Check for leaks

Hey presto done"

The whole engine bay is from my Uk 94 car (now in Jap spec 93 car).

Im almost positive that it is the old type as I went to halfords yesterday and they said they wont touch the old type ones.

I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

Hi just had my 1992 uk z regased at cool wheels in st helens merseyside with compatable oil (rs24) cost £123.38 it works perfectly.

But they did advice me not to alter the air con system to take the new oil as they dont work and is very costly.

Im no expert on this but £123 is better than spending hundreds on something that may not work.

I am - it does work! ;) :D

My car has been converted and filled with the new gas R134a.

It works perfectly.....and is now about 2 years since been done.

FYI it was Phil at Blackmoor service station (Manchester) that did this job when he changed my compressor.

It will cost more than a normal regas if the aircon system is original. They have to change the valve on the system so that is can be hooked up to the European aircon machines. I think the new valve from what I can remember is about £25 ish so look to be paying about £80-£90 all in.

why do you want aircon in the uk anyway just remove the tops or open the windows and listen to the exhaust rumble and comments as you pass pedestrians never hot enough in this country for it, added bonus less weight and things to go wrong lol

That sounds very expensive mate!! JeffTT can organize a re-gas with the R12 replacement for about £80 IIRC.......

........and there are plenty of other mobile car a/c specialists that will od it for a similar price. Even down here in the expensive Home Counties; so I'm sure someone up north would be cheaper!!

Listen to this man - he has also done a good write-up on the process here at one time......

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

LOL - personal preference really. IMO that's nonsense mate - on a hot summers day it can be too humid in this country so a/c is a necessity!!

I would never buy a car without it - it's just so much more comfortable to have a/c. Even in my daily drive with the roof down, it gets too hot once the ambient temp gets above 26 degrees; at speeds below 40mph. Then at much higher speeds, it's just too noisy or uncomfortable.

Much nicer with the roof up and a/c set at 20.......

this is what ive done on my rangie ...get a R12 to R13 adaptor from ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WEBSITEINBOUND-AIRCON-R12-TO-R134a-ADAPTOR_W0QQitemZ370343965244QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_3?hash=item563a38723c that screws on the low pressure side of system and let the R12 go into a container (the sky)...go to halfords and buy a large bottle of R13 gas for £40 when bought which has oil mixed into it and follow insructions to top system up of car and hey presto ice cold air for 2 years now with no damage to pump or seals:winkiss: Now ime not saying its ideal but it worked for me and still does after 20,000 miles

please do this at your own risks and the above should not be taken as sound advice for these cars;)
