cheers pal. i got the axpe stands but where the front jacking points are rather far back i have to raise the front soooo far up..

i know i could try raising it from the rear first but i may aswell be brave, start her up and reverse her up the ramps and then jack the front up onto stands...

i would also feel safer underneath knowing i have part of the car on ramps and not all of it under axle stands.

i am in the middle of removing dash so i reckon i wouldn't need them until about the 23rd ish. that weekend

let me know what you can do :)

Damien

yes, they are ideal. Always handy to have a set.

Im sure thats quite a bit more than they used to cost from Halfords though.

the only thing i stil cant get my head around is.......

i need the car raised 18 inches (obviously the back ramp wont go that high but i can offset that by raising front more and putting railway sleepers (found some) under the axle stands to get the extra 3inches..

but how on earth do i get the front that high? I'm sure the 2tonne jack cannot raise the front by 18 inches so would i need to do it by stages?

i.e raise car on axle stands, place sleeper under jack and raise some more and keep going?

still cant work out how im going to the do front that high O.o

what do you need it 18" high for ?

You should'nt need to go any higher than a jack & axle stands plus ramps can provide.

Bear in mind the car is already about 6" off the ground (floor to sills height) normally.

clearance to do manual conversion :whistling:

clearance to do manual conversion :whistling:

I can confirm that the ramps provide enough clearance for manual conversion. Have removed at least a dozen Z gearboxes and refitted with the car on Ramps/axle stands.

Sometimes its easier just to do it like that than to get it on the 2 poster ramp becuase it becomes a 1 person job, rather than a 2 person.

so 18 inches too high? how did you get the car up as high though?

my 2 ton jack dont raise very high.

also... i have the car in the garage, rear first. should i use the ramps at the front or back for easiest raising method? (prefer not to start the car by the way)

Car is about 6" high as standard, so you need jack to lift it 12".

The job is usually done with 4 ramps, but sometimes 2 ramps and 2 axle stands. Does'nt matter either way.

ok :) i may try raising the rear first though as the jacking point is further to the back.......... but then again..... no handbrake this way :(

so should i raise the rear... chock the front... place ramps under rear... then jack the front and place axle stands under?

this the easiest way? :1eye:

You will find it easier to remove the prop if you can spin the rear wheels to access all of the propshaft bolts, so put ramps at front, axle stands at rear.

ok ill take your advice :)

halfords foldable chocks strong enough to hold the front in place whilst i put axle stands up rear? or is it better to put ramps under front first?

I put the wheels on railway sleepers. 2 high plus measuring from floor to sill is enough to get the box out easily. I have a 55cm lift jack though.

Where are you trying to place the front axle stands? you can put them under the front crossmember.

cool, cheers for the info. i will see if alanz are like this and if not i will have to grab them....

alanz? :gunsmilie:

Mine are the same, but without the ramps matey.

Well I was following nissans guide and the front safety stands are a bit behind front wheel.

Edited by damien

that maybe why you can't get the jack high enough to get the axle stands there ;) If you lift from the crossmember, then put an axle stand either side of the jack (on the crossmember)

so doing it this way would avoid the need of a ramp? :punk:

can you show me what the crossmember looks like? obviously its before the lifting point for the front but i dont want to make any silly mistakes :)

Yes mate. It's the front garage jack point on the maual page and there's a couple of close up pics attached too
