I need help, I just bought a Z a week ago so i'm very new to all this.

I was giving it a bit of beans earlier in 2nd gear when I heard a crunch and all my battery, abs and 'light' came on. The car smelt a bit too. Still starts and runs but i'm afraid to drive it at the moment just incase its something serious. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

errmm... look and see if the belts are still on the front of engine?

  • Author

Do I have to take the front panel off or anything? Sorry im not very mechanically minded

No just look downwards behind the panel you will see three belts crossing close together (aux belts - air con, alt, pas) check all thse are present are not stuipidly loose

Lol I can see the problem. All the belts are still in place apart from the fan belt which is half on half off because a cog and raidiator fan seem to have come away. How much are these normally to replace?

Radiator fan? is the cog right next to this and looks like it will fit in? if so sounds like the viscous coupling, as for the belts there not expensive you can buy the set for around £30.00 do the belt tensioners look ok?

  • Author

Yeah they look ok, the cog and fan has come away from a socket with the fan still attached

Ok i think you mean the main fan should have white blades (or at least mine has) the viscous coupling should be attatched to this and look something like this >

is this what has come away from the fan??

  • Author

Yes thats it, but it hasnt come away from the fan. The fan and the coupling has come away from the main part of the engine. I'll try and go and take pics.

Ok well that is an important part really lol, it controls the fans rpm and kicks in at a certain point due to the solution inside, i'd say MJP should carry these and should be cheaper than going to Nissan :)

have a look at the traders section

soooo...... the fan is falling off i gather? is it just a case of bolting the fan back on properly??

if this is the case i would put locktight on the thread, although i cant see it just coming off on its own there must be another problem lurking there?

I would want to do more investigation to be honest i thought maybe the fan was knackered what is the thread like etc?, i'm no mechanic to be honest just personal knowledge, maybe give jeff at zedworld a call and have a word with him, you dont want that fan coming of at speeed!

Apparently the water pump has snapped hence why the fan came away so I need a new water pump, so I figure i may aswell change the belts at the same time

The belts are an easy change and you will be able to get the pack from D.T.A on here not sure on how hard the pump is to change.

Thats EXACTLY what has happened to mine Jeff, and obviously the OP.

How did you go about fixing yours? New water pump and belts?

ahhhhh,, all makes sense, i suppose there is a lot of strain on that shaft when that fan is whizzing round so fast....

and fireblade did say he was "giving it some beans"

Thats EXACTLY what has happened to mine Jeff, and obviously the OP.

It was a customers zed, and yes we had to do a cambelt /water pump service to sort it out.

Jeff TT

I'm going to change the ancillary belts and water pump on mine to sort it. Cambelt was changed fairly recently. I'm probably going to put a new shroud on too as mine got slightly obliterrated by the coupling and fan coming off at speed
