Well after painting my spare wing in olive drab, I'd noticed a few things has slightly touched it whilst it was in the garage, and had marked it badly, so that was out the window.

The original red paint was multicoloured and was beyond polishing in some areas so I decided ages ago to change it.

I chose a simple colour, and thought I'd start by painting up the spare JDM spec rear bumper I had to replace the damaged UK one on the car. At this stage I just cant afford a bodyshop respray so here goes lol...

Good old trusty Simoniz white gloss... with hellfrauds lacquer :whistling: its gonna be a couple of months until its all ready as theres some bodywork issues to get repaired but for now its a start. I'm not expecting perfection but I'll take as long as I can with it for a good job. Happy with the results on the bumper, just need new pinstriping

pics so far - bumper just 'trial fitted'

thanks guys

Got my mate sorting out a few blebs here and there then it'll be onto the rest of the car. I've had no painting experience apart from the odd satin black trim here and there lol. But I have a good understanding and hopefully it pays off! Already told the missus if we dont like it then I'll save up over the summer and get it done black at a bodyshop next winter

Hmmm some spilt red paint on the rest of your zed there matety, bit of turps an a good polish should get you back to White lol,

  • Author

haha yeah just needs rubbing back down to white lol

cant wait to do the rest, but I HAVE to wait until the bodywork is sorted! :( not looking forward to the bonnet though lol!

look into how much it will cost in cans to do the lot might find it not much cheaper than getting a self prep done at a proper bodyshop

The paint is £1.99 per can, 500ml

Lacquer is a bit more - about £6 per can, again 500ml

about £120 in total for materials. I'm committed now so we'll see how it goes, like I said can always be changed.

understand you want to take the challenge on but full respray will cost more in cans than your estimating plus any bodyshop will not want to take on the job if it goes wrong with-out stripping all the paint you,ve put on, back-off , which will cost as celly and singe pack can only be described by myelf as flatting bubble gum cause it does,nt seem to really dry and does,nt seem to keep its shine i admit you have seem to got a really really good finish on the bumper though

meh who cares if it goes wrong - cant look much worse than the multi-red finish! :D

guess what colour i like best,,,,,,,:2guns:

brown? :tt2:

Baz, i was just sitting here thinking about doing what your going to do, and take my time to respray my car my self. with patents and that, it could really come off well. and that got me thinking....(no smoke yet)

Considering the Zed is mainly bolt together. wouldn't it just be easier if you found a white zed that's being broken, or spare or repair. with really good body work. and swap the following parts

Bonnet

wings

doors

bootlid

front bumper

rear bumper

Targas

this would leave the windscreen pillars and top bars, the sills and rear quarter panels, and the rear of the car that needed respraying. then its just a case of experimenting to see if you can get a color match for the rest. and give you a lot less car to respray.

Just a thought. And you might even find it easier to go black, as a color match is a lot less noticeable and the bigger areas already have a good finish.

Those parts from a breaker would cost £300+

Nah thanks for the idea matey, but I'm happy with my cans lol, it will mean more to me and I'm well proud of the progress so far. Gonna borrow a gazebo off my mate and do the front end this weekend - bumper, wings, bonnet

The car would look like a 'Joseph'. Better off giving those panels a blow over rather than to have an assortment of shades of the same colour.

Why don't you just hire out a compressor and do the job to a better and more efficient standard? Rattle cans paint is all cellulose and will cloud/dull within a few days of painting. Horrible paint.

I want pictures of the results, and send me a PM with some tips lol if not, ill have to come kidnap you and force you into respraying mine or ill set the gerbils on you lol

anyway, £300+ is cheaper than a full respray at a body shop ;)

personally i thought it was a blinding idea, anyone breaking a bay side blue 2+2 near me? lol

obviously you get all the main parts from the same car. then its just color matching the bits you have to spray with the parts you have. could be doable would depend on your color matching ability. plus you would have to use a compressor and airgun, or you're not going to be able to mix the paint to achieve the 15 year faded look.

I know what you are saying Si, believe me if I had bought my Z for like £5k then it would be bodyshop all the way. BUT.. it was £800 and is shaping up really well as a complete package, come summer it should be an awesome machine and if the paint is really that shite it'll get a proper paint job at the end of this year.

Why don't you take what you have to a bodyshop. Imagine seeing it's potential. :)

It really isn't worth bothering. Unless the panels you buy have new/recent paint, spending the time and effort trying to colour match turns out to be a complete false economy. You'll never get it spot on and you'll end up having to blend anyway....by which time you may as well have just blown all the panels in.

lol, yeah i know what you mean, was just an idea and see what other people thought about.

Still going to get mine done in bay side blue, ive always loved that color, just cant seem to find the color code anywhere. although im yet to check skyline forums.

Bayside blue is probably the nicest colour for the Z32. If you do go that route, then make sure you get rid of the JDM bronze tint glass and get yourself some UK glass. Will make the whole lot work a lot better.

When eventually I get mine repainted in the new 370Z pearl white, I'll be swapping out all the glass. I'd go for Bayside Blue if I was doing a bareshell repaint.

As for the code, bayside blue is TV2 I think.
