Hi all,

A few weeks ago i noticed that my car would make a humming noise just as i approached 3,000 rpm and then it would go as i carried on up the rev range.

This has now got a bit more prominent!

Is it possibly a wheel beaaring? it seems like its coming from the left rear ( thats the side that i have noticed that my tyre is wearing on the inside )

Any ideas are welcome.

Dan.

yeah sounds feasible that its the wheel bearing

rpm , from around 2,500 to 3,000 rpm through any gear. The brakes need replacing all round so could it possibly warpage of a disc ?? But the thing is it doesnt judder through the wheel at all, if the noise wasn't made you wouldn't know it.

Hi all,

me again, driving about with this noise for a while i have noticed a few things,

It doesn't alter under cornering, and if i go up the rev range with no boost the noise does not occur. But under boost it does every time !

I'm maybe thinking that it could be a propshaft bearing instead??? Only making the noise when the extra power provided by the turbo's kicks in ??

Ideas?

Jack it up and give the wheels a wobble up and down and side to side then give them a spin normally you can tell if its the wheel bearings.

I'll be doing that on tuesday, i'll also stick the car in gear withthe brakes on and give the propshaft a wobble to check for play!...Bloody thing... Hopefully it will be something stupid like a the propshaft support need tightening up.. but i doubt it

propshaft bearing fault is usually speed related - 50mph-60mph iirc.

that rev range is around that speed in the higher gears so its a possibility??? would i check it the way i described above ??

yeah should be able to check it like that underneath, but if its knackered you'll see it straight away as it'll be cracked around the rubber section - or even completely detached from the bearing!

I do remember that when we put the gearbox back in that 1 out of the 6 bolts that go in the support at the back of the box didnt go in because the thread was stripped.... any chance that the others could be takingup too muc strain and therefor coming loose?

I doubt it, seing as all the others were bloody tight.... just thrying to think of everything thats possible.

its a possibility - just like a 5 stud wheel with only 4 nuts on. give it a damn good checkover, if its something underneath I'm sure it'll stick out like a sore thumb.

Hi all, me and my mechanic friend had a mooch around the car and could not find any issues. The prob centre bearing is not dead. There is a small amount of play but there obviousley has to be some. The diff end is fine and the wheel bearings are fine.... Could it possibly be the thrust bearing? just vibrating at a certain rpm? could i get a long nose grease gun up through the clutch fork hole and try to grease it?
