The TT has a small pathetic oil cooler - is it small because Nissan were happy to pump cold oil without an oilstat and a bigger oild cooler would have needed an oilstat - or is there a secret hidden oilstat somewhere that I do not know about?

 

I have dumped the OEM oil-cooler and fitted a MOCOL and I have an OILSTAT (wax thermostat kicks in at 80 degrees) to fit but do not want to reinvent the wheel so to speak! :punk:

Why did you change your oil cooler, was it causing problems? I guess it's small as it does its job, my car is 20 years old with stock oil cooler and I've never had any oil issues.

I guess it depends how you drive ;-)) If you have a standard car then all will be well - if your are upgrading then it goes without saying you will need to upgrade the support services to your engine as you ask more of it.

over cooling the oil can be just as bad as too hot. im sure nissan did their homework on this one and would be a waste of money fitting anything bigger anyway if the std cooler was up to the job.

 

im not sure but i think the manual has a larger cooler than the auto too

UK Models have a MUCH larger oil cooler than Jap Models.

 

Standard UK fitment is 19row 235mm wide. This is also sold as an optional Z "Nismo oil cooler" to other markets.

 

There is no oil stat, instead it uses a pressure check valve.

Cant find decent comparison pics, but anyway Jap is a tiny 6row cooler and UK uses a 19row Cooler, that is both wider and thicker also.

 

The Jap cooler is inadequate for Higher speed running and increased power. Those who have an OIl temp gauge and have upgraded from a Jap cooler to a UK or equivelent will know about the Temperature difference in heavy traffic and hard use.

 

The Stock Jap cooler can actually be cool to touch after a hard run becuase the oil is so hot that its thinned too much to open the pressure check valve and is'nt even circulating to the oil cooler !! Try it yourself, after a good blast you oil cooler should be hot to the touch.

I've got my auto box rad after my manwell conversion, what do ya reckon to using that instead? Just thinking whilst I've got my bumper off.....

Exactly - that was where I was 'at' - last year - thanks matey.

My JAP Auto would get too hot if I was not careful (after market oil temp gauge is essential). Hence the oil cooler upgrade this year. At the same time I am aware that oil that cannot reach it's correct working temp will cause sludge to form and crankcase oil dillution to occur which will of course lead to excessive wear on the bores and elsewhere of course. So the 80 degree thermostat will work ok for the engine oil - should I also fit an 80 degree thermostat for the auto box Legrath. Do the same rules apply? Cheers :clap:

Next question - where is the pressure check valve? And if I have upgraded to a bigger rad with an oilstat - do I need it anymore?

Yeah - I forgot to mention that I am talking about a JAP AUTO here...
