I recently upgraded my broadband with Orange from 8meg to 20meg. My application went through easily enough, and then I noticed my line speed dropped dramatically to less than 1meg. I was told to expect this during the upgrade so I put up with it quite happily. Unfortunately it stayed like that for over a month and after nearly 10 calls to their customer service, I am now getting just under 2meg.

I've been told that the new Dynamic Line Management system that is used for superfast broadband lines talks to your router each night, and if the router doesn't respond (i.e. it's been switched off for the night) then your profile drops and you get a slower speed.

Customer services were quite happy to say my profile had been dropping because I'd not left my router on for 10 days once I'd upgraded (which I only noticed tucked away in an email from them somewhere but which nevertheless is still my fault), and that if I leave my router on for 10 days then the line speed will pick up.

Well it's been nearly a week since I started to leave it on permanently and all I get from my daily speed check is 1.8 meg. I've successfully explained to them that there's nothing wrong with my line, PC, router, connections, etc. as I was getting a decent 5.5meg with their 8meg package.

The last time I spoke to them I asked the question 'do I have to leave my router on all the time in the future to prevent my profile from dropping' and the response was that it's best to leave it on. I barely ever leave my PC on either overnight or while I'm out of the house, and so the router gets switched off with it all. Does this mean that I have to leave it on 24/365 and pay for the electricity, even when I'm on holiday - for fear of having to let my 'profile' gradually build back up again which it isn't I hasten to add.

I'm going to speak to them again tomorrow evening. This is getting ridiculous now! :slap: :mac1:

Was told we could have up to 20 by are providor but the line /exchange needs updating and work done so we are stuck with 8 for now !! :(

I have a 50mb connection, and what orange said it total Shit. They tell you this crap to make you believe that they are changing your line, all they do is select your connection from the Exchange and tell it you can now have up to 20MB down, no it doesnt talk to your router or anything like that, god the last time BT told me that (sorting out friends router), the person on the end of the line said, whats a kilo byte.......

I got tired of orange 'helplines' that didnt, so i went straight to i want to cancel everything, i'm unplugging it + cancelling the direct debit.

35minutes later, it was all fixed + i'm on a better deal!

There's no such thing as superfast through a BT phoneline. IMO

The only true superfast broadband is virgin media. From what I know it's the only fibre optic cable provider in the UK and consider yourself lucky if it's available in your area. Acording to BT they'll have it by the year 2012.

But do you know why they will have it by 2012?? Because the government banned them to not use it until them. Look it up if you don't believe me....

Move to Virgin, 50meg broadband, i pay £32 a month (it was on offer when i took it), easily 5-6.5meg per second download and never any problems apart from the fuse blowing in the socket on the first week but after that it's been up permanently without any problems.

When you can download a 1.2 gig file in 6 and a half minutes you realise you've made the right choice going for 50 meg :D

Even better when your connection spikes to over 100mb a sec and slowly comes back down to 55mb a sec :D

BT are installing Fibre to the cabs at the moment, 40 meg broadband will be available this year.

Whatever the case, at least it's on it's way.
