I am looking for a car audio set up for about 3K, double din with sat nav and the rest of it is up for debate but a decent bass handling system is essential.

Can I have your advice regards what kind of system to buy as well as where to buy it from. I dont mind doing some fiberglassing in the boot but dont want to cut 43565 holes in the interior as im having a nice posh trim done. :glare:

I know feck all about car audio so if anyone can help I would really appreciate the advice.

Use to fit them for a living, All depends on what sort of system you fancy. Are you looking for a monster system that blows your ears out or something a bit more refined?

I have been looking for mine and I can get very good system without chopping the car about and all hidden.

But I would say buy this head unit so so good Pioneer AVIC-F10BT but is over £1000

Im after something tasteful in the car and a pretty boot full to go with my big fat NOS bottle LOL. I dont want it to look like the car was on a smash and grab at Halfords, I listen to drum n bass a lot so needs to handle bass. I know its not a massive budget for audio so my expectations are realistic. Someone said to me go for JL amp and speakers?

Have a look at the JL Audio make very nice subs and MB QUART QSD-216 6.5 in the front doors. JBL is ok mid range stuff.

3k not alot are you fookin mad lol!!!! i did mine for about £500-£600 and it sounds great any louder and within 3 min you have a bloody head ach

And for the amps DLS on of the best at this time but once again looking about £800. All most getting to £3000.

8ace made all the boxes for us as a group buy and they were really cheap and the quality was amazing as is the fit.

If you like the style then drop him a pm as he still might have the templates.

Nice thing with them is you can take them out in 2 min if you ever needed to

I used to have a set of JL audio W7's and I cannot fault them at all. Both the sound and build quality is great, and they have the power too if you want it

this is my definative opinion on reasonably priced range audio equipment:

components up front: Focal

subwoofer: JL Audio

Amps: Genesis

you do not need rear speakers as you will ruin the sound.. a decent SQ system is all about sound staging and if setup properly with the above, you can't lose. for the most 'sound' advice  go to http://www.talkaudio.co.uk forums

have a think about putting in a carputer perhaps. a double din touchscreen, which gives you ample opportunity to put a satnav etc - looks cool.

If you are serious about that much cash, then don't even bother with mp3's as they will sound really, really crap. Have a look at http://flac.sf.net which allows compressed but lossless sounds. Rip your own CD's for the jukebox.

Here is a front end http://www.centrafuse.com/Screenshots.aspx

Check out https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php for example, as alot of music is available in 96kHz, 24bit (or dolby digital styles if you like). Many big bands do actually do sell high def audio, but not on CD and can be hard to find where - but they do make it available. Many DJ's i know have friends in the biz who supply (for performance only...) music.

For that price, you expect to be able to compete in SPL dB Drag competitions, and clarity competitions.

i'm running a full carputer setup with centrafuse front end... i don't recommend it though! far too much time and effort required and that 3k budget will get blown out the window for an sq system... check my rides for spec

Hey Joely, have you any pics of your touchscreen with datascan running??:cool3:

cheers Daz.

lol... what a mission that was! car has been in the garage and not touched since early november... turned on ignition but the psu wont allow boot below a certain voltage, sure enough it was too low so had to dig around for the charger and extension lead. nevertheless, as requested (not sure why the first pic prtsc came out grainy but you get the idea):

datascan on dashboard mode... the dials can be setup to represent any of the parameters but my zed is still in km's so i have the mph on and not long before it came off the road for the winter i fitted a koyo rad... thus the water temp:

datascan1.jpg

this is datascan in data display mode... as above, the dials can be set to whatever parameter you wish:

datascan2.jpg

and finally... datascan in data display, full screen mode. although the touchscreen facility appears pointless in this mode, i can still control the pc through my 'idrive' style control knob where the ashtray used to live:

all the colours have been chosen so that they are the same as the stock dials. this is currently skinned within centrafuse 2, however, this spring/summer i intend to upgrade to centrafuse3 and nds dash to give myself more of headache! i still havent finished the centre console surround coz i'm lazy :( had it all finished and looking good with my last monitor (which blew up and bought a different brand) so have to do it al again with this 1... will look better though, its set in deeper and at a better angle.

Here is a couple of installs I helped put in few years ago for some ideas. Same car, different setups. The Zed boot makes for an almost perfect bass box shape as nearly all the sound is directed forward. You can tune the frequencies on the crossover and use the entire car as a vented box by calculating the volume of the car (cabin gain), and the area of the vent (the windows wound down about an inch and a half).
