Hi all,

Been sniffin round your forum for a while so thought i'd say hi. As you may have guessed i've got a skyline at the mo, but looking for somethin different now (had it 4yrs) and have always admired the zed. Im trying to find a good one - hence why i joined this site, to check the classifieds.

Im looking to get a series III (post '93) as i cant justify gettin a car older than my current car. Top of my list is a '93 tt lwb manual with 63k on it. I wont say where the car is advertised as I dont wanna get gazumped by someone else like me... (sorry).

Trouble is, i know the dealer has had it for at least 6 months and it hasnt been used. Not good. A new clutch master cylinder is ordered for it and i'll get a test drive at the end of the month. Dealer is askin for £3.5k which sounds reasonable - but I know the first thing it'll need doin is the timing belts etc - so lets add 500 to take care of a major service and fluids change.

It has a riduculous 6" single exhaust on, turbo boost controller, oil temp gauge and some naff alloys (possibly an induction kit too - not sure) but otherwise standard. Cloth interior.

The way i see it i have 2 choices: spend 3-4k and get somethin that needs tlc, or spend 6-7k and get somethin thats had tlc (silver zx tt lwb on pistonheads at £5.8k looks spot on - dorset i think). any thoughts?

Also, my current car is N/A and costs nothin to run other than a yearly service for about £150 (nothin has ever gone wrong with it). Am i going to need a new cheque book to maintain a zed? As i would rather blow my cash modifying rather than keepin it workin.

Finally (sorry if im goin on a bit), if anyone hears of a tidy sub 70k tt manual for sale, please let me know. not really into body kits but dont mind if they're tuned, as i know from experience you never get back the money you put in. let someone else pay i say! Has anyone had a full interior retrim at zed world? how much does it cost? probably the second thing id do after servicin the hell out of it...

appreciate the input folks.. cheers

was hoping for a bit more than £100..

add a couple of noughts and its yours, hell for that price i'll chuck the other in as well.

Had a look at the above link - nice motor but probably a bit extreme for me. Im used to less than 200 brake, so 500+ is probably a leap too far. Id either loose my licence or my life. My guess is when you have that much power it becomes a bit of a handfull - was thinking 300 - 350 rwhp would be more than enough for me to start with. I prefer low end power rather than on/off crazy boost. Not that im a wimp or anythin...

thanks for the post tho, keep em coming

I got my first Z a few months ago, and despite insurance being substantial etc. it's great. Cost me 1500 quid, it's a 92 with 60k miles, not one spec of rust - has some rare JDM wheels and awesome falken tyres. The only thing that's gone skew-wiff has been the starter.. which mysteriously fixed itself.

It's not overheated or broken down yet, It's brill fun in the snow and has taken a bit of a hammering to 170 on the clock and still felt fresh as a daisy.

Yes its nosiy, yes the prop vibes a bit, I cant open the boot and I have to rive open the petrol cap.. and yes it looks like pants (due to car-wall interface) but for 1500 quid I've only had 2 better cars for the money (but then i used to find some crazy bargains).

I'd keep your eyes open 3.5k seems a lot of money for a TTZ - spend as little as you can as you'll wanna spend big bucks making it 'your' Z :)

best of luck

IMO buy the best you can not a cheap one. Many people have brought cheap and they end up spending thousands in repair. Keep it standardish in the looks department as there worth more. Also some people buy a cheap car, go 170 mph with a fooked prop, makes you think what your buying hay when buying cheap!

tis true, but then I've had an A1 condition 50k mile EF9 SIR civic in black which was so clean you could eat your food off the suspension... it was like it just came out the factory, that cost me 300 pounds with long mot and tax.

I also had a midnight purple 180sx kouki which was again, mint with a funky old owner for 1k.

Cheap buys can be good..

Have to say Im in the 'spend more - pay less' camp.

If somethin seems too good to be true it usually is. Spent 3k on my skyline 4 yrs ago and not a penny since - apart from servicing and consumables. Could of got one cheaper at the time, but probably would have spent what i saved keepin a poorly-maintained car runnin.

There are bargains out there, but also too many turd boxes waiting to explode with dodgy odometers and tampered mileage. Im no expert, but know enough when to walk away, even when the price is tempting.

thanks for the comments...

Jammy git lol:gunsmilie:

It's fair mate - at the end of a day when you think you got a bargain theres a 9 in 10 chance you don't. I just like to gamble now and again ;-) but yep I've been bitten too aswell as been successful.

Good luck finding what your after :)

I got bitten, badly, really badly, like, properly badly, 2 and a half years and she's almost ready for the MOT, BUT, I've loved every minute of making her my own and bringing her back to life, also tho, the odometer was superglued solid, which isn't good, but she's had a full re-build now so happy days.... But, I'd probably, if doing it again, would buy one that has been cherished, if I had the money, i would definately buy silver streak and knock a wall down in my house so i could have it next to my bed when i slept, oof..... You don't always have to floor it mate, you'll get used to it...

Ouch... 2 and a half years and still no mot. Thats bad alright. What happened? Did the prop shaft come adrift and flip it or somethin? thats a long time to pour money into somethin without even gettin to drive it. I hope the end result makes it all worth while!

Did consider gettin a rough one and restoring it to former glory, but guess im too impatient. Not really hands on, mechanically, either - so would end up shellin out loads of cash gettin someone else to do the work.

still keeping a beady eye on the classifieds, so will hopefully find the ideal motor sooner rather than later - but as the adverts for a certain dark beer say - good things come to those who wait!! here's hopin im a fully affiliated member soon..

thanks for the messages
