Ok we were was surprised to find a broken rear spring on a zed the other day

but even more so that the springs are Eibachs, these are one of those names we all feel happy to trust, not sure if this was a failure due to manufacturer error or wear and tear, incidently the shock although old looking was perfectly servicable,

Will be speaking to Eibach to see what they think, of course I have no idea how old they are or what mileage thay have done but really should not have broken.:(

Ive had 2 broken springs before. one on the fiat coupe and one on the GSI both were oem springs

The key words are 'of course I have no idea how old they are'. Coil springs do break even on modern cars, I had 2 break on my Laguna and I was told by the recovery agent that it is a common failure on a lot of modern vehicles. Springs do an awful lot of work on a car when on the road and with age must become brittle, this results in them breaking. I am not surprised at all and I am sure that Eibach will also be pretty laid back about it, nothing is for life on a car, get used to it, or walk.

I have replaced several broken springs in the last 4 weeks on various cars. The bad weather, almost 4 continuous weeks of compacted snow and ice on side roads then pot holes after the thaw means really rough conditions for suspension.

It wouldn't need to be very old to break given the right conditions/ road surface.

Quite probably not a manufacturing defect, loads of broken springs I've changed over the years look just like that at the break point.

I agree with Jeff... cos imo the ones i have seen were usually broken at the end/s never in or near the centre.

Springs are under constant stress & are a very common failure - seriously, you would not believe how many we change on Mercedes at work week in week out!!! Even on relatively new, low mileage cars!!
