Hi, I've been looking to purchase a 300zx recently. I've got a Primera GT at the moment, so I'm looking for something different.

I'm looking for a manual NA model. I cannot afford to maintain a twin turbo model, but finding them seems to be quite difficult. The other problem I have is insurance. I've been using comparison websites, and I can't seem to get them to recognise the car registration plates. I'm wondering if most of them have had their plates changed at some point? If I don't use the registration plate look up and put it in manually, there is no option for a NA model. According to the websites, the only models that exist are a Turbo and Turbo-Auto. So finding a reliable quote is not possible at the moment.

Another one of my concerns is the issue with imported models. A lot of people that I have seen selling a "300zx", are actually selling the Fairlady model from Japan. I'm worried that people might be selling them as a "300zx" so they can get cheaper insurance on them. I don't want to buy one, provide the insurance company with false information, have my insurance voided, and then be done for insurance fraud.:(

Furthermore, it seems that everyone who is selling their 300zx/Fairlady, has stuck body kits on and messed about under the hood. I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I would like something completely unmodified.

I've had a look through the buying guide, but I'll be honest; I don't really understand it. I was just wondering if anyone had any pointers for buying a first 300zx.

The reason why insurance companies are not recognising the plates is because ALL N/A's are imports, ie fairlady's like you said. The only UK models are the twin turbos, hope this helps, and welcome btw ;)

Yep, as Murt says all NA's are Imports. In fact the Majority of all 300zx's in the UK are imports (about 80%). The only Uk model available was the Twin Turbo 2+2.

The Import model is indeed referred to as the Fairlady in Japan, but its just a name, and we refer to them all as 300zx.

Japan has a much larger range than we did, you have the option of the 2+2(LWB) and 2+0(SWB) body. The 2+2 is the longer wheel base 4 seater (by far the most common body), while the 2+0 is the rarer Short wheel base 2 seater. Both versions come with Targa roofs as standard, but the the 2+0(SWB) was also available as even rarer Slicktop (non-targa) and Convertible.

You will need to make sure your insuring the correct model as you mention though, as some of the mainstream insurance companies wont offer insurance on imports.

Do a forum search for insurance, and you will find hundreds of threads recommending different companies.

Totally agreed with you there. A lot have had hideous body modifications done to them. It is a shame as the car is naturally beautiful and needs little in the way of visual enhancements. You will find tidy/stock ones about; these are always the best to go for and generally sell better. Unmolested ones look a lot better too.

There are some nice kits/add ons, but these are of the subtle type and most people when modifying tend to go for the ugly/lairy stuff as it stands out more....but more often than not, for completely the wrong reasons!

dont let the fact that you'll need an import worry you too much. some insurance companies will charge more, but most will (and quite rightly should) not charge any more than a UK spec. trying to get some insurance companies to understand the difference between the Z31 and the Z32, and imports and UK specs, etc. can be a bit frustrating at times though :headvswal

...and welcome and good luck (from a guy who has stuck on a bodykit and messed around under the hood ;) )

You rectumified the failings of your first attempt though. You know how much of an improvement you made since replacing the rabbit hutch. :)

this will probably pee a lot of people off but i dont like that shade of blue on the zed i like the other blues the lighter ones but that looks very un-sporty for a ex jap super car of the 90's if u get my drift ! but thats just my oppinion & who am i ????:wheelchair:

Yeah but you want to paint your car matt black! LOL :hurl:

I love sapphire blue. When clean, in person and especially in the sun, it's one of the more sexier colours IMO. They are the only JDM model fitted with blue tint screens over the regular bronze.

This is my friend's car in the US.

i dont want to atall just if they cant match it i cant afford a full respray so would rather go matt black than two tone pearl white lol ps my car cost £700 lol

I'd rather have 2tone paint that have it look like a rabid chalk board on wheels. LOL

Thank you for the replies. Still not sure about insurance, I'll have to ring some companies and find out what their policies are regarding imported vehicles. The cheapest I can get on a twin turbo online is about £1100, which is great considering I'm paying more for the Primera at the moment! But that's the twin turbo UK model, and I'm willing to bet the NA models will be pushing £2000.

you may wish to give them a go.

you need to limit your mileage to less than 5000 per annum for a start.

A couple of good examples there thanks to Si. The second one at Crest Cars is only 8 miles or so from me - so if you wanted someone to come and take a look with you, I'd be happy to help!

Oh, and welcome to the club Alex!

Thank you for the offer. It's quite a long way from where I live, but it's not too bad I guess. I'm trying to get a week off work this month so I can have a look at some. However if I can't get the insurance sorted, I won't be going at all!

I'm 19. I am actually with Adrian Flux at the moment for my other car, they were a lot cheaper than everyone else I have to say. The only problem I had was that they kept changing the policy price and the excess every time I asked them to send me it.
