Hi all !! I am a newbie and a Nissan 300 zx twin turbo owner.

I recently had my top end rebuilt and had new bigger hybrid turbos fitted, after a while I started getting a mild knocking sound, which turned louder , its sounds like two hammers knocking together and resulted in a lose of power.

I have verbally rang an nissan expertise gargage and they have said its the bottom end.

The expertise gargae i used to do the rebuild on top end have said the same, but i am really annoyed at the money spent on the rebuild of top end and their expertise why they never suggested any thing abt the botton end when i had the top end rebuilt??? Can I have ur views on this?????

I HAVE BEEN QUOTED £1150 from Auto Fix to rebuild the button end but this was all done verbally over the phone.

I am in hertfordshire near to london any suggestion of any trustworthy mechanic garages in the south east /london

Would appreciate all views comment etc .. have no engine mechanical knowledge and feel like I have been ripped off by this expert nissan garage in hertford region ...dont wonna say the name of garage but Im sure u keen Nissan enthusiast should know the garage!

help!!

Hello hudson,

A little more information would help,

What was the issue with the top end that required a rebuild?

a) Noisy tappets / cams failure

b) You wanted a parts rebuild

c) You where advised by the garage

Did you have the turbo`s changed because:

a) They were faulty

b) You wanted better ones

c) You where advised by the garage

How many miles have you covered since the work was done, did you get any receipt/ warranty with the work?

How did the car run before and after the work?

Hudson remember all to often emotions take over where our cars are concerned and this clouds our reasoning a little. Any time work is done on a car and a subsequent issue arises you do have to be sure the two are linked and its not just the "since you worked on my car" mentality, of course you could be completely correct and the work done either overlooked an underlying problem with the engine OR they caused the problem..who knows without an inspection, meanwhile keep calm and deal with it objectively.

I do not know who you are referring too who did the work but if they are a decent trading garage warranty is law not an option, not sure why they quoted you over the phone maybe a recall and ask for the owner / manager and request that any reply to be put in writing, also check if they are a member of any motoring organisation that would speak to them on your behalf. The quote over the phone for a bottom end rebuild should be taken as a guesstimate as without a strip down the level of work required is unknown, could be extensive including crank work / replacement etc or not? who knows without disassemble...be careful with that one.

It is possible that a quicker and more cost effective answer is to replace the engine for a known good one, of course swapping over the turbo`s etc.

But your a long way off that kind of decision yet, an engine repair / rebuild means only one place for you and that is "Jimmer" off this very forum , sure he will pop along soon and add his thoughts.

My thoughts are that if there were an evident fault with the bottom end, they would have been quick enough to tout for the extra work.

If there were no untoward noise anywhere else at the time, then no need to repair/dis-assemble. As Jeff has said, there could be a connection, but to be honest, pretty much near impossible to prove or substantiate now.

Good luck getting it all sorted.

Hi Jeff... thanks for your time in answering my thread I really appreciate it , I have no mechanical knowledge ..

The reason I had the top end rebuilt was my turbos seized up and when I took it to the garage ....not a normal run of the mill garage .. specialises in high performance and race spec cars.. they told me the pipes to the turbos were blocked and loads of other bits needed changing ..engine seals etc so I said rebuild it then.

After the work was complete I was told to run it in when I got to 500 miles to bring it back so they could turn the PSI UP and change the oil.

I reached 200 miles when the knocking noise started, I rang the garage and told them and he said it sounds like the buttom end or big end and wasnt anything to do with the work he did to the turbos and rebuild of the top end. The car was only run at weekends after the work was done and the garage said this might have been the problem the car sitting there.!!!!????

Just dont want to spend another large amount to rebuild the bottom end if thats not the problem so confused.

I had a mechanic look at the car and he said it was the big ends defo, I AM GOING TO GET A SECOND THIRD AND FORTH QUOTE.

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR TIME !!

Your car looks great. I have the same colour 300ZX as you.

Thanks for your reply , just dont know what direction to go in to solve the problem.. rebuild the button or new engine :(

iv got the same bother hudson, bought mine about 3 months back probs only done 500miles since then, it had a slight tapping that seemed to go once warmed up then a couple of weeks back developed in a knocking sound that wont go away, iv tried removing each coil pack whilst holding the revs at 2500 rpm to see if the knocking goes away as suggested by stellaz didnt make any difference though, so we are guna remove the sump tommoro and see whats what, hope you get yours sorted soon mate.

if you need a trustworthy zed specialist in the south east it is worth giving D2 a call. google d2 vehicle services and the one that is in strood is him :)
