Well I started the big conversion this afternoon!!! And just got in, Black, bruised and aching, but loads done!!

Got the car on axel stands 18" in the air, and removed drivers seat and interior parts to access gear knob etc, Removed exhausts, propshaft, starter, gearbox links and wires and fitted the pedal box , drained the gear oil and all ready to drop the autobox out tommorrow evening!! :sweatdrop:

One f***in allen bolt on the propshaft took about 1 hour to remove as it was right at the top and i had a 1mm turn on the allen key, I nearly gave up after 20 mins but kept on and whoooo it came off!!

I am a bit confused over the difference in flywheels? I have bought a N/A box to fit in my TT ,I am told that the flywheel is different? Why is it different and what are the differences? I will be putting a lightened flywheel and TT exedy clutch in but i was just curious of the differences? if anyone can shed some light on that for me it would be appreciated.

Anyway thats all for now, I only wrote this to share with people who understand what I`m doing, as the girlfriend has moaned all day and thinks its a useless exersise!!! Women

Heres a few more pics of progress tonight, 1 Auto tt flywheel removed and picture of ;

My mate is helping me on Sunday to get the box back in, so i need to get all the stuff ready for him, so....

I have a few questions to ask, if you dont mind helping out ,and have you any other tips for me at this stage.

1. I need to remove the auto pilot bushing? is this in picture 3 right in the centre by my arrow? just checking?

2. I need to install a new MT pilot bushing, Do I just pick one up from Nissan parts? and order ref numbers?

3. Prop-shaft??? Do i need to alter the N/A prop to fit or will it be ok as it is??

3 flywheels, from left to right, Auto tt,manual TT, Manual N/A

Cheers in advance

I have recently installed a N/A gearbox with lightened TT flywheel, after reading about the problems of getting the auto-spigot bearing out so I made up a tool that works on a tapper, just pops though the centre and expands out gripping the auto-spigot and use’s the end of the crank to push out (see attached pic’s)

autospigot.th.jpg,autospigot1.th.jpg,autospigot4.th.jpg ,autospigot3.th.jpg ,autospigot2.th.jpg

And when you have got the auto-spigot you then have to put the new manual-spigot bearing in so by using the flange from the auto flex plate i’ve made this, see attached pic’s

spigotinsettool.th.jpg,spigotinsettool1.th.jpg,spigotinsettool2.th.jpg,spigotinsettool3.th.jpg,spigotinsettool4.th.jpg

I also popped the new spigot bearing(needle roller type) and bearing holder in the freezer for a few days the bolted the main body on the end of the crank, popped bearing/bearing holder in the centre of the main body then hit it until it hit the stop on main body, then remove main body and with using the bearing holder tap spigot bearing the right depth. One Job done and many more to do....!

Nice work Iain Knight, That looks a great tool!!

I found the spigot bearing really easy to get out!! Less than 30 seconds for me with a chisel and hammer, I must have been lucky i suppose.

Thanks for that mate

Well today, I went to Nissan Wallasey to collect my spigot bearing and set to work on the old one, to my surprise it came out very easy, I was amazed as i wasnt looking forward to getting it out!!

Next I fitted the flywheel back on, got the clutch and plate on easy peasy BUT..... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I spent 3 f-in hours trying to get to box on, and still havent done it!!:headvswal Its half an inch from going in and wont got any further!!! I`ve left it now till the morning, when my mate is calling round to give me a hand, I must admit i think with 2 people it should fly on!!:punk:

So really close now, one thing i am annoyed about is e-bay!! I ordered a braded clutch line on Tuesday and it hasnt arrived yet!! so cant test tommorrow even if i do get the box back on.

Daz :D

you did'nt grease the bush did you thinking the box would go home easier...iff yes then theres a chance the shaft has stopped due to hydraulic effect from the grease

No Bud, I cant even get the spline into the clutch plate section, The gearbox bellhousing is hitting on the tunnel

To be honest, I think tommorrow with 2 of us it should be a lot easier

Have you any tips for me for getting it in?? :punk:

Cheers Mucker!!

 Just seen this:thumbup:, I like them bald though :tt2:

We had a similar problem with clearance. It turned out the when the weight of the gearbox is not on the engine the back portion of the engine rises up slightly making the angle wrong for fitting the box. We slighly raised the front of the engine, and this provided the angle and the clearance we needed to position the box. Hope that helps a bit

Spot on bud, I`ve had a chat with one of the lads on the forum and thats exacly what he said, the easiest way is to jack the front crank pulley gently and that lowers the back of the engine making the angle of the engine line up with the box.

Cheers Mate

The Gearbox is in!!!!!! ye harrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Thanks to redbarons technical help line !!!!! cheers Phil, just a few connections and i`m on the road again:dance:

Well I`m nearly done!! I would have been 100% done if the bloody braded clutch line would have turned up from e-bay, but no show :cursing:

So after some advise from redbaron, I tilted the engine backwards by jacking the crank pully and the engine moved on its mounts just enough to slide the gearbox on, and slid it did, easy, and on my own, 1 hour later it was bolted up and ready for prop and exhausts! :hammer:

A bit of messing is needed to seperate the props and swap them about, but no problems there. :hammer:

But one big f**k up was the thickness of the starter plates. I was informed they needed to be 5mm thick, but i found out after trying to start the car they are too thick and only needed to be about 2/3mm, it sounded like a percussion drill when i cranked the car!!

Anyways the interior is almost back together and just the clutch line to put on and bleed and i`m back on the road. Thanks for everyones help and support through my transformation, I cant wait to test it!! :hyper:

Just hope the box is ok
