Not happy, as my car failed the mot and not on anything structural or important.

In the past 2 years mot's it has passed with flying colours with no cats.

This year, different mot station, as the one i used before have closed down, they failed it on emissions due to no cats.

Unfortunately it states on the logbook, first reg date 2004 (obviously when it was first registered in this country)

The reg plate on the car is a K so 93' ish.

I checked all the usual places, and the dates come back as 1990.

So pre 92 doesnt need a cat test, however, trying to prove this to the tester is proving difficult

What can i produce to prove beyond any reasonable doubt that what be acceptable to the mot station

Any ideas are greatly appreciated

Cheers

Graham

The problem is your car has incorrectly been recorded as manufactured 2004 - see http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/application?origin=vnav_bar.jsp&event=bea.portal.framework.internal.refresh&pageid=Vehicle+Enquiry - So when they log your car into the system, it will dictate that the cat test is needed...

There are a few mot testers on here who may be able to advise, Ossian for example, but without getting DVLA to alter your logbook I think you may struggle.

All that is on the log book, is : date of first registration : 08/02/04 and the date of first registration in the UK 08/02/04, so not even a 1993 etc on there. But it is obvious its not a 2004 lol

The tester did say that it will have a date on the seatbelt, but i was honest and told him i had changed that, it has '89 on it anyway, so not far out, but i did show him the date stamp on the rear plastic light cover which states 09/1990. He didnt say much after that apart from if you can get anything to prove the year of manufacture, then i will pass it

Might make the car worth more with an 04 plate lol:hyper:

Who's gonna start the bidding...............

Hang on though............. no mot = worthless:headvswal

Ive just phoned DVLA and basically i have to send the log book to them, highlight the errors with a cover note and they will look into it, doesnt help now though as legally i cant drive the car, which is my daily drive:headvswal

get the vin no and get a Nissan garage to check get a letter from them stating year of manufacture or there is a date stamped on the rear roller blind as well

Is it worth taking it to another testing station and see if they pick up on what the current job's worth has.

Nissan garage, probably wont have a clue with imports, i think they only hold info on UK cars, however i will give them a quick call to see if they can help.

Stamp on the roller blind, boot carpet, door sill, plastic light cover, all state 09/1990 Infact ive already printed of that info with pics to take with me to help prove my case

Now there is something i never knew!!!!

I'd probably still just risk it myself tho, how much detail do they add to the database? It may well just show up as still MOT'd till the end of the month.

The guy is obviously just being difficult for the sake of it here! I mean for goodness sake he knows full well its not a 2004 car!

Very true, but as its on a K plate, it would suggest it was a '93 and therefore outside of the pre 92 cat test...in his mind

Just phoned my local friendly Nissan dealer and as i suspected:xxx:

Is it failing on the emissions themselves or because it doesn't have a cat and should (in his eyes) There is way of reducing emissions by disconnecting a boost pipe or something (Someone will tell you how)

  • Author

Hi Tony, no he told me if it was a pre 92 it would pass the emissions test with no cats.(like in previous years) Maybe the limit tolerances are lower for a car with cats, but if it was a 93 it woould fail on emissions because it has no cats

The 300zx in not on the emissons data base, There for it must go in for a pre cat test. simple as :slap:

  • Author

I would normally agree with you there Dave, but he showed me the chart on the wall that he works to and on there was the 300zx:cry:

Im Taking it back in at 9am tomorrow and he said as long as i can show him the places where the manufacture date is stamped, it should be fine.

Each tester must have different guides they work too or not as the case may be. For eg the only advisory last year was a little oil leak, which i knew about and to be honest hasnt been done and is still the same today.

The only advisory this time, front brake discs slightly worn, so why didnt he pick up on the oil leak. Bunch of:xxx:

Is that up to date though, the thread was 2004, im pretty sure things will have changed since then

Ive just noticed another thing on the fail sheet, you are not gonna believe this one

Nearside and offside front position lamps (side lights basically)..........incorrect colour

WTF i have white leds in there, they look HID in colour, why would this be incorrect

  • Author

Defo look white to me, but after reading the mot testers handbook/guide, it only states that the light colour should be white or yellow, it doesnt mention any shades of white lol
