Is it just my imagination or are (other) people driving slower nowadays?

I don't mean because of traffic volume; I mean conciously (or unconciously:rolleyes:) driving slower. I know it's dark during the evening drive home but even in good clear daylight I find more and more people driving (and not just the old in their Hondas or Rovers) at 5 or 10mph below the limit; whatever that may be. Even not exceeding 60 on dual carriageways or motorways!!

On my daily commute; along a nice straight national speed limit road, it seems most people potter along at no more than 45. In fact this week Ive seen the same dope in a Golf driving at 35 - and then he slows to 25 for the short 40mph section:rant:

I hate to admit it; but I have found myself driving a little agressively just to make sure I don't get held up! EG identifying the slowies early and just pulling out in front of them and booting it - or overtaking in the slightest gap:wack:

I think this has been discussed not too long ago; but what do you reckon?

Have most people got points so they're not risking any more?

Credit crunch/high fuel prices; so they're saving money?

Brainwashed by all this "carbon footprint" nonsense?

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

i know it sounds stupid as i own a sports gt car but i'm quite a sensible driver. perhaps it stems from me once having waay to many points on my license for fear of loosing it!

I'll be honest, i find most people drive too slow, but i often think maybe thats just me cos i wanna get round everywhere quickly. Not purposefully as such but its just me. I anticipate things quickly, so i get out quickly at round a bouts and junctions whereas others seem to dither about.

I overtake an awful lot as i take the stance, if i don't get round them while i can then i'm gonna end up stuck behind them for miles and miles!!!

I can't say i've noticed anything changed as such in regards to people driving slower, but it does piss me off!

must add tho i drive at the speed limit not below it if i can help it. (dependent on road conditions of course;) )

I must admit im am one of those drivers lol!!!!

Do about 45-50mph in the 60s. Just nice and relaxed whats the rush

You're the type that i want to nudge the corner of your car and send you off into a hedge!

There doesn't need to be a rush, i just don't want to drive slower than my Grandpa!

You only drive fast because you dont want people to see your wheels

The slower you go the more people can admire the cars ;)

definately agree with you Rich - people are driving slower. i guess its half petrol prices and half enviro-terrorism ;)

on the plus side it makes it easier to overtake them :D

Not at all stupid mate - I'm also a sensible driver. I don't want to "speed" everywhere; but I would just like to be able to drive at a speed that is safely and reasonably achievable on the roads. If 60 is the speed limit on a clear, straight, dry A road, then 40-45 is too slow in my opinion; and dangerous as it encourages other drivers to perform risky overtaking!

I don't break the 30/40/50 limits in towns and villages (well - perhaps subject to a margin of 1-3mph) however on a clear, empty, dry motorway I will, if I have a very long journey, drive as fast as safely possible in accordance with the prevailing conditions!!

Yup, I drive as though Miss Daisy was in the back seat. Never sacrifice safety for speed. IMO

Yeah yeah Grandad :smash:

depends on what car im driving an where im driving it, if im in the zed and im going through the town then i drive slow (just cos i love the head turning, im such a poser) but if im on the dual carrigeway and there's a jumped up litle twat in a corsa that is giving it then i tend to put my foot to the floor and let him eat my dust lol

Then slow down and let him catch up and do it again..........and again...........and again :D Loadsa fun

I like to prey on bigger meat tho, Boxsters and TT's are always nice to show up :nana2:

I have to admit that since settling into Zed ownership I've slowed right down and rarely go over the limit on the roads...except for those long drives on the motorway and even then only if there's not much else on the road. I just feel much more relaxed nowadays so tend to take my time a bit more...plus the looks on peoples faces when I drive past is priceless...enjoy every second of it!

Now this really does p1ss me off, other day i had to over take 2 people in a row on a A road (single carriage way) in my work van... they were doing 40 in a 60. I mean seriously, i don't want to lose my job and get to sites late just because some idiot decides they want to drive slowly....

i usually stick to the limit.......the drivers i can't understand are the ones that do 40-45 in a 60 and keep to that 40-45 in a 30.....i just dont get it.....

My daily driver is a diesel disco automatic and is certainly no ball of fire and has the cornering ability of a wardrobe, so I am probably one of those people you are refering to, but when I get in the zed I do drive it with a bit of spirit because you can overtake cars very safely and quickly. I do stick to speed limits tho' excepting the on motorways.:)

Same as me i use to drive like a tit in my punto and mr2. Then you realise whats the point, you will only get stuck behind somthing else a little down the road. and will only save 5min at the most say on a 15mile trip

Set off 10 min sooner then

I like to drive at a speed that requires me to have think about it, otherwise I find myself falling asleep! I seriously think I'm more dangerous in a line of slow traffic as I lose concentration. You have to push it just a little bit to make it fun. The trick is finding roads where you can do it and remain within the speed limit, which are rapidly disappearing with ridiculessly low new limits being put everywhere.
