I.m thinking of getting a land rover discovery as a replacement for my old fiat van, anyone had a discovery? not sure if to go petrol/LPG or diesel, the land rover will be the 1995 to 1998 ish model. So what should I look out for on these? Thanks.

Not speaking from experience, but I have heard that they are a Money pit, and something different goes wrong on them every other week? You'd be better with something Jap, like an Isuzu Trooper or a Mitsubishi L200 etc.

They are very agricultural to drive, but since you're going from a Fiat Van, it may feel luxurious to drive.

Driven a number of them, pretty capable off road, but not the nicest car to drive. Better off with a Freelander van if your budget can stretch to that. Slightly better to drive.

Yup stay well away unless you have deep pockets and the desire to fix cars every week.

Now I do know that Freelanders are Rubbish, My mate had 2 and they cost him 1000's in repair bills, Why he went and bought a second one I'l never now. :smash:

Have no idea what they are like for reliability generally. Friend of mine had one however and his is now rocking on 200,000 miles (had it since 50K) and I think the only think he's had to have replaced were a few wheel bearings and reconditioned transfer box. Not bad for the mileage.

Some friends of ours had a freelander and it was always playing up. Thought about the discovery so I could have the use of 7 seats, and also when folded down would still have the capacity of a van. Seems they are trouble though. The jap cars may be a better option but parts may be more expensive. I will have to have a little think. Cheers.

Watch out for rust for Discos of that sort of age.

Was shown a 95-96 model today with the boot floor shot, the owner opened the tailgate lifted the carpet and there was the fuel tank in full view.

chassis can also be a problem area on them.

^^^^ Everyone i mot is rotten around that age.when they go they go bad.The boot floors rot real bad as the tailgate seals fail.

^^^^^^ lol funny you should say that, this one was just tested the end of September.

We got this as a daily drive now.... Touch wood - no probs (well it had a whine at 70 but land rover sorted out as we got 1 year warranty) - like Someone said - bit agricultural to drive - but high up with good driving position.

Diesel too so pretty torquey and pretty good on fuel. I think the older freelanders are the ones with probs....

got a tdi on a 97 plate mate....flipping great car gets @ 25mpg but takes you anywhere, feels a bit agricultural at first but you'll soon love it drive height and ride quality very good...never had any grief mech wise...easy to work on and lots of spares...as above check for rust under the rear and inside the rear wheel arches, avoid smokey ones and V8's unless they are lpg'd or very cheap....loads of them out there should get a decent one for no more than £2k i reckon...most 4x4 dealers hike up the prices but will come down if haggling if i was you i'd look over local private owned ones first dont bust a gut over the high spec ones leather versions as you'll fill it with dogs, mud and junk if used properly :D
