My new loom has finally arrived, woohoo! (or so I thought :-)

How the hell do ya fit it! Nightmare, I've taken the dash off (as I have a few things that need seeing to anyways), but there's no way the ECU plug will fit though the hole, and you can't see the hole from the inside at all. Am I right in thinking it's the heater matrix stopping it from going through?

I don't really want to take that off, heard it's a ball ache, and my driver's seat is fully forward and no battery or loom on the car, so can't move it forward for access, so don't wanna have to remove that too! Also, I'm working all weekend, just hope i can remember where the 5000 pieces of dashboard, heater ducts/pipes etc. go!

Anyone done this, have any advice? Would be nice if i could just cut a new hole in the bulkhead, nearer the ECU and bung the old one up! :smash:

Also, the loom is a left hand drive one, and to be honest, it seems all arse over tit, and can't see how i can make it fit (although i'm sure you can, but i haven't even got the damn plug through the damn hole yet) :)

Any help/advice is much appreciated guys, cheers........

ive never does one myself but i would imagine you would have to remove the air-con to have access to the hole in the bulkhead.

Youll have to undo the bracket that seals the a/c pipes against the bulkhead in the engine bay.Once this is done the heater box will move slightly so you can get behind it.Where it passes into the car inside is a guide bracket held by two 10mm headed nuts.this has to be removed for the plug to pass. Its still a pita to do but worth it after.

yep, gotta remove the fan blower & air con box, you will then have to remove a covering plate bolted to the firewall which is only accessible by removing these boxes...then, if you loosen the matrix bolts you can pull it forward to negate anything obstructing the plug.Feed it through a bit at a time. it is also necessary to undo the aircon pipes on the engine side of the fire wall to make life easier, you`ll need a bloody great spanner for that 27mm if i recall, but don`t quote me on that, check the nut diameter first.MOST importantly is take a piccie, and label everything as it comes off the engine then label the corresponding parts on the new loom. All you will have is some extra loom to fit under the battery tray..it will fit. What a difference it makes too! bon chance Monsieur Tudor.

Never removed the air box? Just free the a/c pipes so the box can be pulled away from the bulkhead.Once this is done its possible to get your hand behind and release the plate.

best thing to do is get rid of your air con at this point! lol i done my loom just last week but i removed air con when doing rebuild so when it came to getting to the hole i removed the aircon box completly & it was so easy to get to after that!....old loom out & new one in, all done in less than a day no problem!

I cannot understand people removing the aircon from these cars or indeed any car. I know we don't always have hot summers but when we do, the aircon comes into its own even with the targas off. I would not buy any car now without aircon and surprisingly there are still manufacturers out there who still do not fit it as standard.

For the sake of a couple of bolts i found it way easier just removing it all, had no problems with moving the plugs in or out after that.I do get very short tempered with faffing about though,so this worked for me,plus i didn`t have a clue how to do the job..now i know how everything works, comes apart, goes back etc.Can totally strip the dash in half an hour now..putting it back, well that`s another story!

It's putting it back that is bothering me, haha, I'm extremely mechanically minded, and very practical, but have a memory like a siv, so it's gonna be a bit like a very large very stressful jigsaw puzzle :-) Anyone got a picture of these couple of bolts?

Thanks for the info guys...

I'm with you on that one mate, each to their own tho, and if your after shaving a few pounds from your zed and you don't need it, then fair do's, although I'd rather keep mine....

i got rid og the whole lot when i rebuilt the engine..shed a few pond less bits in the way when u come tork on the car(like your finding out now) & i never use it these cars cost enough in fuel without adding to it, all my cars have had aircon & i've never used it.. we dont have the climate that needs it anyway! but if you old boys are having hot flushes u better keep it lol :wack: less to go wrong too!!

Will removing those pipes release the aircon gas?......

  • Author

Good stuff matey! I like to feel the connectors on mine, all lovely, shiny and new, yay! Not got it fitted yet tho, been busy, plus having a 'major trauma' doing it to! :)

So will removing those pipes release the aircon gas?

if you undo the nuts engine side..yes. If you just undo the mounting nuts on the interior you can pull everything forward a bit and keep all the gas, you`ll then have to reach up behind to find the bracket holding the loom and undo the 2 nuts..jeez there`s a lot of nuts!
