sounds bizarre but try the dvla, they might point you in a good direction or alernatively phone some major driving schools, a friend of mine did one and it lowered his insurance premium but apparently it has to be a proper certified one that you have to pay quite steeply for. Just a suggestion.

I once had 10 minutes in a skid control car (one of those ones with a pair of wheel on stabilisers which have hydraulic lifters to lift the rear wheels off the ground). Found that to be a real eye opener.

You're absolutely right to be looking along the police / dvla line. Most people go for track training but track driving is completely different as you can have confidence of (a) no-one coming the other way, (b) flag warning of slippery surface, © no manhole covers, etc and (d) the confidence that there is enough tarmac to drift round corners. None of that is possible on the road.

If you find something good then let us know ...

Essex police do one, think it's run at Braintee. A friend with an MR2 Turbo is having a go soon.

Hiya guys,

I've done my Advanced test with the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. The course doesn't just teach you to drive fast (or making good progress as they call it!) but also teaches you WHEN the conditions are right to do it. The only costs are for course material and the test itself - the instructors all do it voluntarily!

If you want to check it out try the following:-

Does this help?
