About 2 days ago there was an unusual "rattling" noise coming from the engine bay, however before i was able to investigate it has now gone. But the engine has lost its v6 grumble, sounds much higher pitched and like a ford fiesta :headvswal

Doesnt seem to be any change in performance. But it is a really really loud and annoying noise. Its like a whinning noise which directly matches the revs of the engine and listening under the bonnet sounds like its coming from the engine block :-S.

Any ideas?

be carefull mate..if its related to rpm it could be the cambelt tensioner

:-S doesnt sound good as its directly related to engine rpm. ill get a sound recording tomorrow if i can.

sounds like some kind of bearing, maybe alternator or something??

silly question but, is it a manual? if it is, does it stop with the clutch pressed?

if none of the above, then i would say check everything with a pulley attached, e.g. aux units, idle's and tentioner.

its a manual NA. The noise is still there with the clutch depressed. The cambelt service was done 4 months ago, not sure what parts were replaced ill dig out the receipt.

yea it was only the belts that were replaced. Im guessing if it is a cambelt pulley i shouldnt drive it until its fixed?

im getting a lot of people telling me its the big end bearing that has gone. Is that expensive/difficult to replace?

They would remove the aux belts to do the cam belt and could easily have overtightened them, the noise starting 4 months after them being done would make me suspect this first. If it is a cambelt pulley your right you should not really drive it.

It is a lot of work to replace in comparision to a pulley, your best bet is visting a decent local garage and getting them to diagnose rather than guessing, it could potentially save you from a knackered engine.

just listen to your vid sounds just like a zed i had in a few weeks ago. It turned out to be the cambelt tensioner. one of the bolts had come lose and had rotated its way out untill it couldnt rotate any more because it was hitting the back of the pulley itself. put a nice criss cross patten on the head of the bolt and a fooking great big 90 deg flanged burr on the pulley.

Garage failed to find the fault.

The "rattle" part of the noise has gone after an oil change and the engine sounds really "meaty" again. But that overlaying higher pitched whirring noise is still there. They said it seems to be coming from furher back in the engine bay than the belt area. Its there when revving in neutral, 1st, 2nd and quietly in 3rd. But at 30mph in 4th and 5th the noise isnt present at all :-S

does it sound like a metalic metal type noise or more like belt squeel, as i have the same prob at the min one of my belts squeels heavily when cold or when i use the heater , after about 30secs it disapears??? I need to check the belts and tensioners i think. just wondered if it was the same case with yours?

the best way i can think to describe it is that it sounds like a ford fiesta reversing out of a driveway lol. The noise sounds the same when engine is warm or cold.

i assume so, it was done at Zedworld. I think they use genuine belts.

yes it would be.

definately engine bay??? just wondering if it could be the Diff whining the way you say sounds like a fiesta???

definately engine bay. listening to it as close as i can without burning my ears off, i'd say it was in the middle but just off slightly to the passenger side.

^^ thats possible. Anyway to test it? eg if i put my aircon on should the noise change etc.

(i know thats probably a stupid question but this is the first car ive had with aircon lol.)

you will hear it enguage to truely elimnate it take the belt off

see if that cures the problem

You can leave the aircon belt off.

If that doesn't work, it's worth removing each belt in turn to see if the noise stops (won't do any harm to start the engine briefly to listen).

I had this very same noise from an alternator bearing and although there felt like no play in the bearing, under tension it was noisy.

Start with the easy stuff before diving in and splashing cash out :)
