Hi guys, im new to zeds.

 

I noticed there are alot more autos out there than manuals,

I intend to get one fairly soon, and i was told once its not to hard to change from auto to manual.

 

I was just wondering how much work is it really, Gearbox change?

ECU change?

Wiring?

Anything else involved.

 

Also is there much of an advantage to having a manual to an auto, are they just as easy to squeeze power out of.

 

Any help appreciated.

Your better off buying a manual to begin with if possible although the conversion is not horrendous to do. Cost wise the parts are about £700 and can be carried out by any DiY mechanic. You do not require to change the ECU or wiring. The autos have a slightly smaller turbo output but once you start the tuning excercise, i.e., chipped ECU, upgrading the injectors, etc., the difference will not be noticed and usually larger turbos are also logical step. The auto boxes on Zeds are not the strongest and are quickly affected by lack of servicing which tends to happen on older cars as they get cheaper. This then causes failure either through gearbox filters getting clogged or running on low oil which overheats and cause seals and linings to fail. Thus the reason that autos are much cheaper to buy than manuals.

Sorry little bit of a Hijack but other then what you have said does the prop or diff need changing?? I have a auto SWB and am about to do the manual conversion and am also looking into what i need.

You'll need the first half of the prop as well.

 

From memory:

Gearbox

Linkage + stick

clutch pedal

brake pedal

balance bar

(if on a TT...)

the clutch booster tanks + piping and valves, although not required does make driving easier

clutch

thrust bearing

flywheel

master and slave cylinders + hydraulic lines

 

One thing to note is that if you have a TT and try and fit an NA box from memory the bellhousing is different (as is the flywheel) but the outcome is basically that the starter motor sits too close to the flywheel and needs spacers to move it away so it can be bolted up sucessfully. (I think its that way round!)

 

When i had mine done it transformed the car, well worth it!

yeah mines a TT so will defo be getting a tt box, Just wasnt sure if i could get away with using al the parts from a LWB TT Manual and use my existing prop??

 

but sounds like i might just have to wait till a tt manual swb gets broken

But at that price i may aswell go for a manual to begin with.

Did they ever do SWB TT Manual UK's btw?

you keep the diff,

 

and the rear half of the prop,

 

 

you need the front half of the manual prop, then you mate them in the middle.

 

however, i think you may need to swap the yolks on the props, to sort of mix and match them together

UK spec cars were all LWB twin turbos either auto or manual (mostly auto probably!)
