For some reason on of the radiators in my house is stone cold? its completely full and every other radiator is nice and toasty?? the valve is on full?

The only thing i can think if is a faulty valve?

could be faulty valve, what sort of system is it, is it a combi??

also is the lock sheild valve turned on, if it has a thermostatic valve remove the head (the bit you turn with the tempm markings on) there will be a pin underneath it, get some pliers and gently try and pull the pin up, is any of the pipes at each side hot????

will try that but no the plastic pipes going into the walls are cold?

i know sometimes the other valve that hasnt got the temp head on can be turned off, also if it has a plastic cover on and is screwed in, when turning the screw it can turn the valve off

if you bleed it does the water pi55 out like its under pressure??

99% of the time the valve will be stuck shut. try tapping it with a hammer

pmsl, dont hit anything with a hammer if it is on plastic pipes, it will shoot off and piss water all over

also if its a combi, unless both valves are shut off it will still piss water out if you try and bleed it as its all under pressure

If all other rads are hot, but your sons is cold.

1. Make sure both valves are fully open and rad is bled.

2. on all other rads if fitted with TRV's (thermostatic rad valves) tunrn down to o or lowest it will go. this will force heating to the rad not working.

3. Half way through firing up boiler, turn it off completely to stop pump.

leave for a couple of mins.

4. If you dont have a combi, ie a hot water cylinder, there will be a bleed valve hopefully on the system, usually near the cylinder, any ait may be trapped here. will pm you my number and i can talk you through it.

stu

i only mean tap it. im sure mike isnt daft enough to smack it with a lump hammer, ;)

Also if the inlet is shut off how can the rad still be under pressure, the water only comes in on the one side?

because a combi is pressurised no matter which way it run, if it goes in one way at pressure it goes out the other way in the same pressure, its like an innertube, if its upto pressure no matter where is bursts it will still be the same pressure

Right had the valve top off and theres no screw on it just a piston which popes up when i undid the valve but i managed to get it back on again.

Just shut off all the other radiators or turned them down to on the thermastat valve and still nothing :(

Will try shutting down the combi boiler and try again LOL

Will tap it with a sledge hammer ;)

leave the heating on when the piston pops up, it may have been jammed, combi's dont usually suffer from air locks, if it aint heating up then its deffo a valve prob

Strange, with all the radiators off apart from the bedroom one the boilers burner doesnt fire up?

Shall i remove the thermastic valve again and leave it off?

yup, a combi wont fire up if its hot and has no where to push the hot water to. another thing that says to me that the rad valves are stuck shut, take the thermostatic head off and make sure the other valve is fully open, looking at the other valve turn it to the right all the way, if it doesnt move turn it to the left to make sure it moves back to rule out it aint stuck shut aswell

pull the piston up and down a few times with pliers to make sure its working correctly

tis a combi you have aint it

Yes bud, well sort off LOL its a powermax 155 which is a thermal store combi boiler.

The right side valve seems to be moving ok, i shut it off and on to make sure it was free?

Also on the other radiators i only turned the left hand valve off? is that ok or should i turn both sides off?

Woohooo got heating :)

Just taking the valve off again as i was going to push the piston down to do it manually and i noticed that the pipe was getting warm to the valve so as soon as i pushed in the piston the radiator got hot :) then as i was putting the valve back on i burnt my hand LOL

So many many thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated

Mike

no probs bud, the piston needs to be fully out (ie' pulled right up) to work fully, usually pulling the piston up and down frees it off and makes it work

spary some wd40 on the piston, will stop it sticking again

i tap them with a small hammer as the pin is not connected to the valve only spring loaded.P.S i am a plumber :D
