Hi everyone.

Taken my zed for MOT today and it has failed on 'Nearside Rear wheel steering connection has excessive play'. Can anyone translate to me what this means? I.e. what needs replacing and how much is it going to cost me? :wack:

P.S JeffTT if you read this - been phoning Zedworld to try and get a quote on how much you could do this for all day but had no answer - if you read this contact me via this thread.

Cheers,

James

Sounds like the outer ball joint has gone, however the tester hasnt really been specific enough.

with the nearside rear jacked up and a stand fitted for safety, get someone to shake the N/S/R wheel. Any play should show up and let you identify the worn component.

Failing that go back and ask the tester to show you what he has failed the car on.

If its the outer ball joint, Im sure its about £55 from MJP.

As for fitting http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=92607

Ive changed mine but didnt use the above method, I used a large g clamp and hammer, you just have to be carefull as the arm is alloy.

Hi James,

Ok there are two area`s that can cause the problem the steering ( hicas) arm and the outer hub bush which the steering arm connects to.

It is more common for the problem to be with the arm rather than the bush but either way its the same price to change £110 + vat including retracking.

Sorry you were not able to contact us we were closed today attending a funeral.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry I think I've missed a crucial bit out of my post. The MOT certificate states that the car failed for the following reasons:

*Nearside (TRACK ROD) Rear wheel steering ball joint has excessive play

*Offside (TRACK ROD) Rear wheel steering ball joint has excessive play

*Offside Windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively

*Parking brake lever has no reserve travel

*Service brake efficiency below requirements **DANGEROUS**

I did ask what he meant by the rear wheel steering connection and he said something about the part that comes out of the steering unit itself has play in it and he doesn't know of a way to repair it and he didn't say how much it would cost but he said "the rest is easy but that might sting you".

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

James

*Nearside (TRACK ROD) Rear wheel steering ball joint has excessive play £110 + vat (Inc. tracking)

*Offside (TRACK ROD) Rear wheel steering ball joint has excessive play £110 +vat (Inc. Tracking)

*Offside Windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively £4:00 + vat

*Parking brake lever has no reserve travel £45:00 + vat

*Service brake efficiency below requirements **DANGEROUS** (Included with above)
