Is it true that you can lower the engine to replace the turbos ? or is a full engine out better?

Featured Replies

Dude I would say thats an engine out Job TBH  if you get stuck i Just did mine and am only up the road.

Far longer than it should have, TBH it was a right pig and some of the bolts were just bar stewerds to get off, one at the back of the tub needed hacksawing off and you could only just fit a Ritzla back there. First time I had done it and it probably took me three days, but at least half of that was dealing with problem bolts.

Some of the guys here say they can do them in a few hours!!!!!

One right at the back of the N/S tub at the top on far side, it would come out a few turns and jammed, would go in again and come back out to the same place then jam again. Could not even get the thing out using mole grips or filing it and turning it with an adjustable spanner after the engine was out... needs drilling some pics here. Sods law it was one of those *******s to get to.

You can replace the turbo's without removing the engine or lowering it.

Don't tease us now, spill the beans.

I did my tubs a few years ago , engine out and did alot more as well , all the small water pipes replaced , core plugs , rocker cover gaskets and many new connectors on the loom , took me a whole week .

The problem i have now is the o/s tubs smoking again , i,m looking into whether it would be easier to support the engine from the top and drop the complete front crossmember and suspension as a unit to gain access to the tubs , this way you only have to disconnect 2 front brake pipes and power steering pipes and column leaving all those vunerable brittle loom connectors intact .

Any one done it this way :confused:if so was it a better option ?

you dont need to drop the cross member . you can remove the turbo's without to much problem with no engine drop or cross member drop etc. just takes a bit of care and there easy.

time wise about 4 hours a side to do i would say.

how you manged to do it. I know it can be done but what was the worst bit. Did you replace your tubs with standard tubs or upgrade??

Standard and upgrade units.

Just a case of removing the down pipes and exit housing's from the turbo 's remove the o/s/f wing solinoids and brake master cylinder and pipes off the inner wing section. this gives good space to get to the o/s turbo. only tricky areas are the turbo lock tabs on the nuts to the turbo housing/ manifold. these can be a bit of a pain but long bars and carful work and you can move them all. then small adapted spanners to undo the bolts.

the coolant hoses stay on the turbo just disconnect the rubber hoses. o/s only. The n/s you will need to remove the hoses and pipe work to the turbo.then its just a case of working through the other parts as you see them.
