air filter set up

when traveling above about 35mph if i dip the clutch to say coast up to traffic lights or that the revs will fall right to zero and the car will die then kick back in when the clutch is lifted. my mechanic seems to think that there was some sort of deflector plate or something infront of the air filter and maf to stop the air shooting straight in he recons its been missing after the bodykit was fitted would this cause this or is it something else?

Sounds like TPS. You only really get filter problems when it's wet. The air won't 'shoot straight in'. It's drawn in by the engine and is metered by the MAF. Don't think your mechanic really knows what he's on about.

Hi mate.

I fitted bov's to my old zed before and this problem happened with me.

I then removed the bovs as this was the only thing i had changed to make it happen and the car ran fine, so i was assuming the bovs where passing creating a boost leak.

neither of us could really put our finger on it we just thought that as when you drop the bonnet on an evo when running it pushes air through the filter and the car almost cuts out similar to what mine is doing as if i slow the car down quick enough it doesnt cut out. how would i go about checking the tps? or is it a case of swapping it over with a new one?

Easiest way it through ConZult. But you can via multimeter.

I think you take the signal from the middle wire and set the other probe to battery terminal. You should get a reading of about 0.44v. If it's out, you need to adjust until you get the correct output of around 0.44-0.48v.

To adjust it, there are two small screws on the side, loosen those and turn it until you get the desired reading. If this has no effect on the voltage reading then you either have a duff sensor or cack wiring. I had to replace my TPS.

PS, the nature of a filter is that it defuses the ambient air and as such deflects suddent air surges. Shutting a bonnet should not cause a sudden rush of air unless it's a bull shit filter.

good good something my sparky tools will come into use for apart from sockets and lights lol will give it a check tomorrow. what do you recon about craigs comments si? cars got bovs fitted were on when i bought the car 3 1/2 years ago now however only noticed this when i converted to a manual a few months back car is also only boosting to 7psi

probably was had a lot of nasty custom bits fitted under the hood was in getting it all changed by the new owner

I hate bovs for more reasons other than the fact that they sound awful. They are dumping metered air. Fine if you have stand alone management, but a pointless thing to fit to a stock engine.

Did your car have BOVs fitted to it when it was an Auto? LOL, the won't work on an auto at all! A BOV will only operate when the accelerator pedal is released when running positive boost pressure! This doesn't happen on an auto.

yeah lol the most pointless mod and waste of money on an auto lol i drove the car for ages not even knowing it had them lol i do like them but if it meant it fixed the car id have them removed

I'd junk the things, even in a manual.

When using BOVs, the air is released into the atmosphere and this means that the space between the turbo compressor and the throttle bodies has to be regained and this causes a noticeable delay in boost pressure.

Also, the ECU is programmed to expect the unused air to be recirculated back into the intake and if it doesn't arrive, then there is a momentary 'rich' running and this can cause hesitation.

There is definately no performance gain from fitting BOVs. Infact the opposite.

cool will add that to the list lol car is of the road for a while so trying to get all these sort of jobs done cheers il give these ago and report back lol

Be interesting to know. The bovs will sell! Someone will always pay money for something that does nothing. :)

ok finally got round to checking the tps it was only at about 0.32v so now to adjust it to the correct value and there was the problem only one screw holding it on not 2 and even at that the one wont tighten properly, so going to have to re tap the thread and get some new screws. with the one i set it to the proper value and took it for a drive feels alot more responsive and instead of boosting at 6-7 psi its now 8-9psi however it still cuts out with the clutch in not as quick as it used to mind you

sounds like the air deflector like your mechanic said. well known problem

there is a good site showing how it should be setup. causes the exact problems you have

finally got round to getting this sorted yesterday. all i done was turn the air filter 90 degrees and hey presto car doesnt cut out and runs a hell of alot smoother maybe should have listened to my mechanic when he told me to do it all those months ago lol
