I've recently bought an old-skool Momo steering wheel, which is in 'reasonable' condition. Leather is a little faided and is going a little tacky at the top.

Now, instead of having it retrimmed, I am going to refinish the leather. Just wondering if anyone's done this before.

I am going to buy black leather dye to recolour the wheel so it's an even colour all over using the below (but obviously black)

To finish off and protect. This is the same lacquer product used in the manufacturing of leather. I can get the matte finish which will give the wheel an 'as new' look.

Just wondering if anyone's used any products like this. I'm gonna order this gear tomorrow. If it all goes well, I might start doing some old Z32 leather seats to see how they come up.

I've never even heard of this being done.

If your steering wheel turns out ok, fancy giving mine a go?

One of the lads i share a unit with has just bought a calibra as a doner car for a track project and it just so happened to have a momo steering wheel on it, not far from the one you've just got. I offered him my old momo and ten of the queens finest and we did a swap.......but needs retrimmed or re-finished.

Unless it's torn or damaged, it could be repairable, I've seen some pretty good work done with little product. It should be doable. Won't be factory, but it'll be pretty tidy when done.

no, its not ripped or torn. It's just looking a bit worn. Was thinking of getting it retrimmed but depending on how you get on with yours....;)

Yeah sure. I don't want to loose the momo inprint on the bottom of my wheel nor do I want to pay £100s getting a 'good' retrim.

Won't cost you £100's pal,,i can get u the number tommorow for a chap that re-leathers,,gear stick gaitors, seats, door cards,,dash panels the lot,,and he's good for price,,based on leeds road nest to akbars, so you may have to post the item to him...

Let me know if you want it.............

It will cost hundreds if I want the job done to a standard I'd be happy with, ie, run through a proper machine. Not just a guy stitching them up. Plus I'm funny with wanting to retain the little inprint on the wheel.

Thanks though. :)

it might be more cost effective for you to buy a new steering wheel??? and these chaps are damn good...

I would if this steering wheel hadn't gone out of production 10+ years ago! ;)

Si, I used the Furniture Clinic stuff when I refurbed the leather seats I bought.

Very pleased with the result too. Will be perfect for a stearing wheel.

I re-did all my seats with ......http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/c-117-leather-renovation.aspx

Cleaned them carefully with the cleaner... then applied the first coat by hand then sprayed the next 2 coats on and then sealed..... my leather now looks great.:D

Any before/after shots chaps?

I'll try to dig out some old pics of my leather and post them with some new ones..... Only discovered while in the middle of renovating the seats .... that they were dark grey as standard and not black:nelson:

Might be the only Z with black leather!!!

Yep... did my steering wheel , didn't need to do my gearstick gaiter as I had just had that retrimmed in black leather( Didn't realise that the standard gaiter is pvc:nono: !!) I also had the gaiter made with 2" more leather alround so it has a nice scruntched up look to it:cool:

I've cleaned up my wheel in readiness for applying product. I guess take it slowely and use it sparingly and it should come out ok. Any tips?
