Guys

Had another crack tonight at removing bits to get the engine out on my manual TT. Would really appreciate the following answerd as it will really help with learning the ropes.

1. Do we need to split the engine from the gearbox to remove the engine?. Clearly we need to undo the prop shaft etc if not. But will it all come out in one piece.

2. Does the starter definately need to come off or can it just be dis connected?

3. Is it easiest to undo the exaust from underneath beneath the turbos?

4. Is it easier to undo the engine mounts from above or below.

Any tips will be really helpful as we are doing this on axel stands so room is tight and I dont want to struggle doing unneccesary stuff. The service book leaves a lot to the imagination. :headvswal

1. engine and gearbox will come out together.

2. not sure i take it of only two bolts.

3. just drop of the whole system (three bolt flanges at the front)

4. i'll give you a £1000 if you can undo the engine mounts from above. lol

Take the bonnet of make sure everything is disconnected drain all fluids, air-con pump can stay in the engine bay no need to disconnect lines. if your lifting the engine by the plem make sure the brackets (plem to heads) are there and bolted.

Guys I cant tell you how grateful I am for this I dont have the brackets on the plenham so what do I do?

So exhaust from the 3 bolts is that back from the turbos or further back kind of the ones that meet the straight pipes underneath (easy to get to).

when i lifted mine the other week i split the box and engine and used 2 endless slings that i got through the exhaust manifolds on either side worked for me i think it was 4m slings as well so had to put a couple of knots in

If you split the box from the engine you'll have a right mission getting it back in and married up to the box, so yeah take it out as a lump.

These are the plenum to head brackets mentioned earlier, number 5 in the picture, they hold the sides of the plenum tho the heads, i would think you have these on, otherwise lifting by the plenum is a bad idea as it's only attached in the middle other than these brackets... I lifted mine out using some seat belt but much stronger type stuff, and threaded it through the various 'ribs' of the plenum... HTH mate, stick at it, you'll suss it pal! :duffer:

Some say leave on, ive split them as i was doing other work on the box.

Easier to remove engine with it off as it will get in the way of undoing the zorst bolts

3. Is it easiest to undo the exaust from underneath beneath the turbos?

Seperate just behind the tubs, and pull em out of the way

4. Is it easier to undo the engine mounts from above or below.

Underneath, the mount has 4 x bolts above it, and only one onto the subframe..

One thing i learnt when i swapped engines, if removing box, get 3 x 30cm extension bars and a decent 14mm socket, use these to get to the top bellhousing bolts as they are a total pain.

Also the prop can come off in one peice, undo 2 x 17mm at base of rear geabox mount, and 6 x 8mm allen bolts on diff end. make sure you mark their location with tippex, and remember on the 2 x 17mm the spacers and washer should be above the plate.
