OMG with all my bits just about to go on order I thought I would make a start on removing the engine today.

Its a bit of a worry as we drove the thing into the garage, and now we have no idea how long it will take and if we will even be able to get it running again despite having a fantastic set up on the way :( so much can go wrong but at least the block and heads are built!.

Right until today I was thinking of getting someone like Jimmer to fit it all, but the only reason I bought this car was as a project car for something to do over the winter so fingers crossed me and my friend can do it all :).

I work on MX bikes I used to work in a garage in the early 90s but holy cows what a tough first day. I have the service manual disk thingy and if you flick to the taking engine out section it looks so easy.

It basically says do this and do that and remove Alternator, powersteering pump etc but does not show you how to get the bits off.... so frustrating ahhh. I dont think the engine has ever been out as every single bolt was soooooo tight.

Progress so far

Rad out, pulleys off, Alternator and power steering pump removed, quite a few pipes removed and a fair amount of the electrics disconnected. Took loads of pictures so we can work out how it goes back together.

I have a feeling I will be asking lots of questions over the coming months, I will post pictures as I go.

I just finished taking mine out, I'm sure it aint gonna be as hard as putting it back!;)

When its all finished, the feeling of self satisfaction will be well worth it !

I felt exactly the same when I pulled my first Zed engine.

Good luck bud, and congrats on being hands on !:)

Post up some pics.

Alan...............

to be honest unless you are a zed guru-after spending that much on an engine build i would get someone (like jimmer) to do it for you, there is so much to do that the disc jobbie wont tell ya and jimmer will know

I expect you might be right but like I say it was to do work to as a project car so if I buy all this stuff, pay someone to trim it and do the audio etc then I might as well have just gone out and spent 35K on something done or a new RS focus or something. We cant do the interior, or the audio as we are having a real top system put in by a pro so that only leaves the mechanicals. Only...... OMG Kyle said he will answer any fit qestions along the way but I bet he lives to regret that and the order will take 8 weeks so even at a snails pace we should be ok.

How the hell anyone can get an engine out in 2 hrs is beyond me LOL

Best of luck madmax... it'll be an exciting project for the whole forum to watch, so keep updating it :D

2 questions not covered in the service Manual, would really appreciate answers to these.

1. It says remove front exaust tubes?? it does not say if they come off after the turbos or at the manifold etc

2. With the A/C pump I have undone all the bolts I could see on the front and I could feel a bolt at the back but not sure if that was for the AC how on earth could you get to that as there is not room for a spanner or socket.

1. disconnect the exhaust elbow from the cat pipe or you could even disconnect straight from the back of the turbo.

2. raise the engine slightly with the lift to expose the A/C pump, that way you can get a spanner to it (or even junk the whole lot ;) )

good luck with it buddy, you'll love every minute!!

Thanks silver bullet this is really going to be a community project LOL. I am enjoying doing it.

Do I leave all the AC pipes attached to it when I take it off or does it need to be removed from the engine bay? as it all looks like it is a sealed system.

Leave the a/c pipes attached and swing it forward slightly. The power steering pump can stay in the engine bay and so can the altenator. No need to disconnect any of those.

Bummer they were like the only bits I managed to get off today and they took blinkin hours and they are sitting in a box on my garage floor!. At least I know what to do with the AC.

OOOPS!! To late, another tip is before you refit the engine,on the bracket that holds the power steering pump, file down the bush slightly that mates up against the pump.will save you time fighting to get the pump back on and getting the bolt to mate up in the threaded lug at the rear. You seriously junking the air con,Id leave it personaly,You wont notice any power loss and the ecu cuts the cluch under hard acceleration anyway.

  • Author

Thanks... no i am keeping the air con I think someone on the thread said to remove it but I want it.

When you refit the pump, leave the "b*****d bolt" out.You know the one.Its belt n braces anyway.Must a/c pumps are held by 3 bolts.Nissan went for the over engineered option.Youll need conversion adaptors so you can re gas it with 134a.

quick question, sorry to jump in on your thread but with all the talk of AC LOL can you remove the full AC system with the engine in? i want to junk mine?

Once youve stripped the pipes off the nearside and taken the battery out for access to the bulkhead joins and lines on the inner wing.Shouldnt be a problem Mike.I reckon youll need to hacksaw the bulkhead pipes off though as the unions are aluminium and will round off.

i am changing the rad so i suppose its easier to get to the compressor from there, not too fussed about the lines as they dont weight that much, want to strip off the rad and fan to allow more air flow to the radiator and get rid of the heavy ass compressor :D

and just as i do all this we will have a heatwave

Will the gearbox come out when I lift the engine or do I need to undo it and then take the engine out then drop the gearbox?
