As it failed the mot we have been working on it.

First it failed on the rear fog, it has had the rear reverse light wired as a fog but it just lights up both reverse lights and not very bright so took it all out and blanked off the top reverse light so its much brighter now and you cant tell its been blanked out so thats one job done.

Second was to do a boost leak test, can hear a big leak coming from the passenger side low down, couldnt see it so could be near the turbo??

Worse fail was it has a split on the passenger side inner arch?? not sure how its happened, doesnt look like its been in a crash so not sure if someone has hit something hard and its gone but the original weld has gone so we tried to weld it up but the welder is having an off day LOL so need a new welder now

Its detting at higher boost so checked the timing and it was advanced slightly but not a huge amount, tbh i was expecting it to be highly advanced but was only around 17 tdc so put it back to 15.

Also fit new a few bits i got the other day ie new boot carpet, cardboard and spare wheel, fit the new nose panel and now ran out of time as the footie is on shortly and mikey bean should be around prestons way on them m6 with some more goodies for my car including my 99 spec front :D

You running stock boost Mike?

no its got a jd chip in it so was going to run it at around 0.9 bar to keep it reliable but as its detting a bit i need to sort that first before i will turn up the boost

Just thought i would update this thread without starting a new one ;)

We couldnt weld up the inner arch so its going into a proper garage who is plating it up properly so it wont happen again, stripped down the car today and still cant fathom out how its happened?? no other damage is present?

I have attached a picture of the weld and where its split!!

Anyway got a few more jobs done, changed the fuel lines for some braided ones (cheers chris)

Installed the hardpipes with hks bovs (sorry si)

Ripped out most of the air con and removed a few bits and bobs that i dont need :)

So far i have spent about £700 on the car not including the mot and tax so i'm not doing bad and i have bought a breaker to take bits from to make my car a better one and to fund more bits for my car :)

Jobs to do:

Replace front wings.

Replace brakes

Replace suspension or certainly springs as it sits far to low

Fit 99 spec bumper (already have this)

Fit 99 spec lights (need to buy or convert spare lights)

Poss buy 99 spec rear spoiler

Fit short shifter

Buy new gear knob

See if my interior cleans up ok, if not then fit the interior out of my breaker as its mint.

Need to change the tyres on the volk rims as there lego tyres, but i think the breaker i have coming has near new bridgestones on which happen to be the right size so if there all right i will be having them LOL

Get it on conzult to see whats going on as its detting but i think i have a huge boost leak from the passenger turbo so sort that out and then get it running right on 1 bar of boost.

Other than that i need a few smaller bits and bobs but this whole project is to see how little i can spend and how much i can get done and make the car run right and look great :hyper:

pity you werent closer, me and me dad would have welded that up cheap for ya

it couls have happened due to maybe hitting a pothole with it being so low there will have been no give in the spring so next thing to go is bodywork

  • Author
it actually looks like that may have been welded before

it has been and the weld has gone and yes i do think its hit some low reallt hard at some point in its life which has caused the crack as there does not seem to be anymore damage??

its only going to cost about £30 to have it done so its not too bad :)

worse senario is i will get the inner wings cut from the car i'm breaking and welded into my slicktop to make it better but will see what the welding company says :) the mot place said its nothing major but i want it sorting right :)

yeah, plating it will be suffice, weld the crack then plate over the top then underseal or paint

B***ard car's trying to kill me!! so i have 1 nuckle less now LOL

Still cant find the big boost leak on the passenger side, stripped it all down but cant find it :( think it may be on the manifold!! does anyone know if you can get to the manifold without taking the engine out?? hope so LOL

  • Author
i think you can, im sure steve changed his with the engine in place

i stripped it down as far as i could but couldnt get the turbo intake pipe off so couldnt get near the manifold cover to remove it :(

had to give up in the end as it need to be driveable in the morning to take it to the welders.

tbh were thinking of lifting the engine half out of the bay to sort out the manifolds as i can see its going to be alot easier on the nuckles LOL

Sounds like you had a really good day :)

If you could swap your manifolds with the engine in place why can you not do the turbos??

it is technically possible but the drivers side turbo would be a bitch to get to and once you have dropped the cross member, steering etc it would be alot quicker to lift the engine hence why everyone does.

Well the welding is done :) wasnt as bad as i thought it was and didnt take the guy very long as it wasnt bad enough to plate it. He didnt think its been damaged so thats good news.

Just need to sort this air leak out now  and then swap over some of the bits from my breaker to make a better car out of the 2 :)

Mike

Is your breaker a SWB as im gonna be looking for a Manual conversion kit soon.

Might help ya pay for all thos upgrades :bow:
