You could have a coolant leak.

Hi,

I have had various coolant leaks, one to watch out for are the two rubber hoses that go into the front of the engine block.

If you follow the rubber hose from the top left of the radiator (you are facing the car from the front as if you have opened the bonnet)it connects to an ally pipe which then connects to a rubber hose connecting to the engine block. There are two rubber pipes and they went on my car, you probably won't be able to see them without pulling the car to bits.

£10 for parts and £100 labour to have it fixed.

That was one problem the other was a rad leak but the first I was told from various people is common problem on Z's.

Ta and good luck!!

Eddie ;-)

I have also had a fair shair of coolant leaks the places that I have had fail are as follows.

Water pump seals, you can see this leaking by looking down the centre of the engine at the front.

Bottom hose jubilee clips not tight enough

Faulty radiator cap that had the effect of syphoning the coolant out of the system and overflowing the header bottle.

Have fun.

Thanx guyz for info got under the car today and found problem, water pump pissing out!!

Guess its a good time to get timing belt done aswell?

I have had the coolant leak problem. Looked like the water pump but turned out to be the hose going into it.

Word of warning - Z's run hot - coolant leaks = bad news. When you have one leak you tend to get 3 or 4 afterwards. Check all your other hoses, and replace any that look dodgy. Carry water with you and some repair tape for the next few weeks. Do not let the engine run on if coolant problem occurs. Some cars can hack it - not the Z.

If problems (and expense) persist here is a tip. I have had my system modified. There are about 25 short hoses between the cylinder head and the plenum. Not really needed so had them capped. Also Turbos operate at 300-700 degrees and yet are watercooled. Last time I checked, water boiled at 100 (or 120 in pressurised system)

All that happens is the water turns to steam (very corrosive) going thru the turbos, then goes on to make the rest of the engine hot too. I had the hoses to the turbos capped. Car runs fine and slightly cooler.

Interesting point here!

If you've capped the coolant lines to the turbo's then how are they cooled?

The turbo's aren't designed to be only oil cooled!

The point is that the water wasn't cooling them much anyway. So oil is doing the job on it's own. I've uprated the oil cooler just in case. No problems. SE suggest the mod for high bhp Z's.

Is that not because when you have High displacement Turbo chargers such as TD-05's i think - they are designed to be oil cooled only, Stock ones are not. I wouldn't fancy doing it to mine.

The water cooling is really there to offer some protection from your average Joe public driver who doesn't know he needs to cool down his turbos or fit a timer, or for those who don't really use the blowers much so they do not get especially hot, so water may still have some effect. Checked with Peter at SE on this and he confirms that std turbos can happily live without the water cooling. Mine have for 6 months and still going strong.

Hello. Do you have a missing dog with three legs and answers to the name of "LUCKY"?

Remember to mark the pump in some way to make sure it gets changed or ask for old parts back. Remember they forgot to keep mine though! (SE). Also if you get all the other belts done ask them for a quick guide on how to retension them once they stretch a little and you can't make the 250+mile journey just to get your power steering and alternator working again.... not to mention what affect this slackening may have on the new water pump!

Tell Ian that apparently SE are working on a mod to allow new steering wheel with HICAS. He asked me to check out the cd-rom but I left it in UK, I saw what was posted on here and maybe it's a better idea for him to speak to SE.

See you soon...

Rob

Ok. Have you got any address/number details and I'll see what sort of deal they'll do.
