Hi

got a bit of a problem, i have a 2 pod A pillar with Boost and Oil temp, very useful i hear you all shout..however, in the day, i cant see them..they have illumination that is on by default, when darkness falls, they are Brill, literally...but when day comes it a different story.

They are "Auto Gauge" types. with a smoked glass front.

Any one got any suggestions or can point me in the right direction to better gauges

Autometer guages, well trusted and reliable guages, you get cheaper makes on ebay that light up different colours and do a sweep test when starting up but they are all show and no go !

It's not the glass as such, the easiest thing to do is provide them with some shade, notice how ALL cars stock gauges are in a binnacle?

Bet yours are mounted either without the surrounds (if they were supplied with any) or don't have them (the shades) angled right.

What you are suffering from is called "bleaching" it won't matter what gauge you fit, with no shade the light from them just gets lost in the surrounding light.

yes, but its far worse on smoked gauges. I have fitted a lot of gauges to peoples cars over the years and the smoked versions really do suffer in sunlight compared to plain gauges.

A normal gauge is readable without any backlighting, but a smoked gauge by design requires backlighting to make them visible, and ofcourse backlighting is not very effective in sunlight.

A peaked shade will help though, providing the light is not entering the cabin at certain angles.

I have these gauges and yes, they are great in the night, and bad in sunlight, and i have the visors/binnacles/peaked shade, but i like 'em.

Yeah, nice dials. Bit pricey thou. Ive got a bit of clear perspex which i'm going to spray tint a light smoke, cut to size and fit. I'll see what it looks like and if the daylight vision has improved.

I'll post the result.
