Ok, i have a problem, runs fine, and can rev it to ya hearts content, no miss fire, take it out and put a load on the engine and it's on 5 more than 6. I have changed the plugs, set my timing correctly, it was slightly out, cleaned up all the connectors on my TPS and CAS, and all the coil pack connectors, although most of the plugs are a bit knackered, they are making a good connection. Also, when i rev it gently up to about 2000rpm, it's a little spluttery, and i get a clickity clikity clickity sound, which sounds like an injector spacking out, but turn the cas and all sounds well. After 2000rpm it is as sweet as nut, until you drive it... All i can think of now is a dodgy coilpack?

I also get alot of pops out of the exhaust (it's been de-cated) is that anything to do with it?

Has anyone else got any suggestions on this? Beginning to become a little frustrating now, although the pleasure of curing it will totally out do the traumas!

Cheers guys, also, is there a Z specialist anywhere near Manchester/Bolton???

300zx specialist - Phil at Blackmoor service station,Manchester - Have used him a couple of times & travel over 90 miles to do so. The garage is a bog standard place, nothing fancy, but Phil has worked on these cars for years and even owned one.

He recently did my auto/manual conversion, perfect job & the usual courtesy call afterward to check all is OK.

Really decent guy, can't recommend him enough.

Excellent mate, cheers.....

Anyone got any ideas before I take it there? Will have to be a trailer job cos she ain't legitimate at the mo :-(

And I'd rather fix it myself if poss, but at least there's someone near by if i can't........

Try disconnecting 1 coil pack at a time to see if you can isolate it to one cylinder then take it from there. It could be a coil pack that is breaking down at anything more than fast idle cos obviously its working harder.

Failing that could you borrow a good used PTU to rule that out....

Has anyone got a working used ptu and or a good coil pack i could borrow? If it cures it I'll buy it!!!

Could it be the wiring loom - maybe if you have the engine running and get the bonnet open and (take care ok) gently move parts of the loom around - also take the throttle cable cover off and gently move the fuel and coil pack supply leads around - found a random misfire like this once - there was a break in an injector wire...

Worth a try.

Your not far off there matey! I accidentally touched one of the injector connectors very gently and it dropped down to 5, had a look and all the inj connectors are gunked up with the green death, even tho I got them spotless less than a year ago! I will cleaning them all up tomorrow and all should be well! Thanks...

Clutch started slipping today too, so new one on the way, eeeeeee, it never ends, but at least it keeps me off the streets and I love doing it :-)

Get some silicone grease (Servisol or similar) - and (ater cleaning again) stuff the connectors with it - last time you will ever have to worry about that issue.

You can ge it a Maplins if you have one handy -or of course ebay.

Cheers mate. Not that arsed about the clutch really, I was kind of expecting it to go sometime soon, will have the new one on Friday, and will be fitted by Monday, I know this car inside out now, so kind of looking forward to doing it really!

However, it was kind of strange how it went... The clutch seemed fine, was disengaging about 2 thirds of the way down, not slipping, then I got in it the next day, and it was disengaging right at the very top and slipping, even in 3rd gear at 10 MPH, and no play in the pedal, so I adjusted it, gave it some play, and still slipping and still right at the top. Strange, I'm wondering if the fork is knackered, or maybe the springs on the pressure plate have given up. I guess I'll find out when I pull it!

Any thoughts on that mate?

I'm still with the auto-box with SAW (Shift At Will) - until I blow that up ;-))

Right, I've cleaned all the injector connections up, all shiny and new, took a few hours of back ache (both male and female conns.) and she's still missing!

I think the only things left in equasion are the PTU or a dodgy injector, but I can't isolate which cylinder, if it's the same one all the time is missing, as it only does it whilst driving, ticks over and revs perfectly..... But it does back fire quite a lot too....

Any thoughts? Oh, and for some strange reason, the clutch is working perfectly today! Very strange, new one has already been bought anyways :-(

Any thoughts on the miss-fire travesty???

Cheers chaps (and gals :-)....

Well you cleaned the connections - but what about the wires? have to wiggled, and yanked everything about whilst she is ticking over?

  • Author

Yep, that did cause a couple of cylinders to drop out before, but now you can wiggle everything to your hearts content, and she still runs lovely, till you take her for a spin....

It does seem to be alot worse at low revs when you put a load on the engine etc., say setting off from slightly moving in 2nd gear, put ya foot down and splutter miss miss, does eventually pick up speed, then after about 4000 rpm, seems to be better, but still does miss, just not half as bad....

if its backfireing a suspect its overfuelling?? so logically it would be an injector piling out too much fuel or a coil pack not working so therefor the fuel is just going in, not burning then going through the exhaust causing the backfire? not sure how accurate that is but thats my personnal thoughts, Mine was the same when i bought it, i bought a set of coil packs off ebay (secondhand) for £60 changed them all and its been fine since, so worth a try really.

sorry if i couldent be any more help

p.s. mine was vibrating quite alot at idle though?! you say urs is fine?

Have you had the ecu out at all??? Not sat the connector in properly or over tightened the bolt on it??

  • Author

Well, I would say it is fine, but it could be smoother on idle i guess, does vibrate a little, I've nothing to compare it to, and it's the best it's been, but it probably could be smoother...

I have had the ECU out, I will check the connector tomorrow, and blitzing all 6 coil packs sounds like a good idea, but I have shelled out loads lately, pockets are getting a little thin, not that I mind, can't wait to finish her, just wouldn't like to buy anything I don't have to, but it's gotta be either one of them or the PTU I'm thinking?

I'll keep persevering, and I'll keep ya posted.... Cheers...

ecu connector was my prob with a missfire, tightened the bolt to much which makes it bow.

I will check the ECU connector first thing in the morning, if no different, then that's another thing eliminated...... Thanks again peeps....

There is a lot of bodgery and lots of insulation tape, looks like someone has butchered the wiring loom to incorporate something that is no longer on the car, the entire car inside and out is like someone used a chainsaw instead of a screw driver, but I have rectified and repaired 95% of it as good if not better than original, took me two years mind, but getting there, get her running right, couple of brake pipes, rear fog light, clutch, MOT, insurance, happy days........ Can't wait, just wish she would stop missing!!!!
