hi all, iv had a nightmare weekend with the car and need some help as im a complete newb with 300's!

basically took the car for an mot, as the car got to the mot station the temperature was right up and i had no heating, then steam started pouring out from the engine bay, and what a surprise, the readiator was completely empty :(

i waited for engine to cool down for an hr or so then filled radiator up with 2ltrs of water, the water came straight back out within seconds :(

it seems the water is coming out really quickly from the front of the engine towards the top, where there is 2 metal pipes around 2" coming out and bending to the left towards drivers side into to 2" rubber pipes!

is this my thermostst housing????

how do i go about sorting this?????

does anyone have a guide on a thermostat replacement????

thanks,

dan

the water pump is behind there, along with the thermostat, if you search for water pump or cambelt change you will have the info you need bud, as that job should be part of the cambelt change.

Unlikely to be a thermostat problem

more likely to be a water leak

the water must be going somewhere

look in the passenger footwell

look on the floor under the car

look in the oil cap

try putting lots more water in and seeing where the steam is coming from, succh as back of engine, front of engine, radiator etc

thanks for the quick replies guys!!

i guess the best thing for me to do is get the fan housing off and have a proper look with better access!!

the water is definately coming from where the two big pipes join the engine, sounds like i may need a new water pump and thermostat then :(

mental, thanks for the offer buddy, i will more than likely take you up on that, just give me a week to asses the problem more and ill let you know!!

can anyone tell me how to strip out the fan housing etc so i have better access?????

dan

might just be the silicone pipes that have split ,that attach the two water pipes to the block

you can get to them without stripping the fan/housing

you will need a long socket with allen key end on

no probs mate have it all sitting in my cupboard doing nothing..

may just be the gasket sealer on the pipes as it got so hot as they use liquid gasket on them. if so its an easy quick fix for pennies mate.

good luck

the fan housing is in 2 parts mate. 1 top 1 bottom and is held on by little cable ties around the edge of the radiator

sounds like exactly the problem i had a couple of years ago. identical symptoms. the two water pipes going under the plenum from the front had corroded.

also......

today i tried to take the two 2" metal pipes off the front of the engine, iv taken off the securing allen key bolts and the clips on the connecting rubber hoses but they still arnt budging:(:(

have i missed a couple of bolts or is it just rust now holding them on????

dan

It will be the two top short hoses that go from the housing to the two cylinder heads. These hoses pop every few years.

I had trouble with them and could take the housing off in a few minutes without removing the viscous fan in the end. The problem I ended up with was then not getting the flange sealed properly with instant blue gasket stuff. Maybe you have gasket goo bonding yours on tight. Make sure you found all the bolts though! Use a mirror if necessary and replace both those short hoses when its off. Check the online workshop manual to be sure you took out all the allen bolts. When one of these hoses goes it drips onto the water pump and often makes it look like the pump has failed when it has not.

ill have another try today, im sure i have removed all the allen key bolts, iv removed two bolts from the upper pipe, but the pipe just wont budge :(

maybe its just sealant thats holding it on then???

also, does anyone have a link to a guide for changing the water pump and thermostat???

as just to be sure im going to change both to stop any problems in the near future

cheers for the guide mate, just what i was after, nice one!!!

ill crack on again tomorrow and see if i can get all this sorted!!

watch also that the allen screw you took out from below the housing is not the top one for the lower thermostat housing and you might have just left in the one for the top part. The 2 screws are right next to each other and hard to see or feel which one you are removing.

Hope you get it sorted.
