I've read a few posts on here that say putting on aftermarket steering wheels can effect the HICAS.

 

The answer seems to be to fit the proper Boss.

 

Can someone clarify the situation and explain why it causes the HICAS to play up.

Hicas uses a steering angle sensor on the steering shaft where the steering wheel bolts on.

 

If you fit a non-hicas steering boss then the sensor no longer works. So Hicas will shut down and throw an error.

......plus you also need to make sure the 'wheel is properly centred on "straight ahead"

Not necessarily - unless it specifies that it works with the HICAS then don't believe it. IIRC MIke at MJP sells the proper boss.
