The boot release aint working properly.

 

To get it to open you have to keep the lever pulled up while at the same time lifting the boot lid (easy if you have a passenger or 12 foot arms)

 

I'm thinking it's either the catch or the struts. Anyone had a similar problem

yeah in my case it was the boot lock mechanism securing bolts...they had stripped their threads so the mech wouldnt sit still when shutting the boot lid down...so the lid pushed the mech down a bit and fouled/trapped the release when being pulled...new bolts held the unit tight and in place...bit of trial an error to get the position right but did the trick

Easy fix, the tailgate lock requires pulling down a little to put some pre-load on the boot so that it springs up when released.

 

Open the boot up ( if you can, lol ) undo the centre section behind the 300zx panel, just two plastic hand turn screws. Push it back and it will reveal the lock /catch assembly, undo the three 10mm bolts a little and then tap the lock downwards a small way and then do up the bolts again.

 

Fit the boot panel again and close the lid, now when you pull the lever the boot will pop up.
