Need to change the CAS disc for an AEM one. Have a spare CAS (thanks Topless!) and gone to start the work and realise it has tamper proof screws.

Anyone done this before fancy giving me some tips before I attack it with a drill? :)

i was going to say i think its a sealed unit and not meant to be taken apart lol

i think you need to have a play :)

yes, saw Jeffs thread, unfortunately doesn't say how to take it apart!

Jaffa wants to run AEM management system, this requires changing a component inside the CAS to work correctly.

I'll add that the AEM is up and running nicely :) the AEM does sometimes hic-up with the standard timing disc and the new fixes that, though I think I've only noticed one 'glitch' so far.

you have to be very carefull, dont force anything and look for cotter pins to knock out.

just take your time and double check every thing.

you might want to make sure you have a spare CAS in case of the unthinkable

Jaffa,

I am getting a "hic-cup" at about 2500 rpm occasionally. How did you get on replacing the part inside the CAS? What exactly was it you replaced?

Have you got a pic of the screws? i may be able to tell ya what tool ya need.

Jaffa allowed me the task of fitting the disc. i would advise you not to do it unless you have a vice with soft jaws, a small punch and drifts and a special tool to get the security scews out (if fitted with them). i dont have the tool for the screws so, all i did was to drill a small pilot hole in the heads then used an "easy out" to extract them.

the only thing you need to replace is the actual disc itself. what ever you do. do not attempt to disasemble the optical eye unit.

I am running an AEM system with wideband sensors and Map sensor. Do you know what timing disc it is and where to get it? I would not attempt this myself as i would most likely break it!

go onto the AEM website and either phone them as i did, or follow the link to ordering one. they will send it out free of charge. best to get a second CAS and strip that down. that way, you will have one of each. you might have troubles with it running correctly. the tunner that James and myself use is currently talking to the guys over in the states to see if he can get propper softwear solutions for the z32

Thanks mate, will get on the phone to them. The CAS i have on the car is brand new with the new style plug as i replaced the engine loom. I have a spare old style CAS but the plug is different! Has Jaffa got the one you did on his car now and is it running ok?

There are pics on the tt.net, is you go to the appendix.

Thanks Topless,

Just had a quick look on the AEM forum and Jaffa has an outstanding question about the CAS which no-one has answered in the 300zx section. Would the AEM disc be a straight replacement or would i then need to do any remapping afterwards?

needs remapping afterwards and no, it's not working on the new one yet. Seems to be a problem with the recommended settings.

Cheers Jaffa,

I will leave it until you have managed to sort yours out and then i will get it all done at once. I take it the "hiccup" will not damage anything as it just loses power for a split second?

hiccup is fine, just annoying. The problem I have is that the timing drifts at high-rpm/load which causes a problem as you can imagine.

I'm going to swap the CAS for another stock one to fix the drifting then see how often it hiccups after that.

Preference will be to get the one with the AEM disc up and running and have done with it...
