Im after a new daily driver. About 1k cash budget (no more loans/finance for me)

I'll be doing just under 100 miles commuting each day, which is nearly all motorway so I would like 50+ motorway mpg.

Suggestions ?

My mum has only ever owned metro's for the past 25 years. She has never owned or driven any other car  , probably the main reason Im not a fan :o But too low mpg for my needs anyway, and cars that small are geared for town rather than motorway.

I just bought an 02 Laguna diesel, 6 speed box so good for motorway miles and easily returns 50mpg combined, little over your budget, I paid £1500 but that was an estate with history etc so you may be able to find one in your budget, probably on ebay.

The only experience i ever had was riding to work in my mate's 1.1 which was woefully slow so i never expected to be so entertained.

I drive 70 miles a day in mine and it's fine on the motorway really and suprisingly quiet especially with the radio on.

The 38mpg i get is an average of storming it up the country roads and motorway journeys. I haven't really done a test to see how far i can get on one tank by driving it carefully but it should do at least 45+mpg

I picked up a 2000 W mondeo 2.0 Ghia at the auctions for £400, full history and has never missed a beat

Thanks. The cars I was considering myself were :

Audi A4 1.9 tdi

VW passat 1.9 tdi

VW Golf mk4 1.9 tdi

Bmw 318d/320d/325d (e36)

But most of them are stretching the budget, so may end up with a rough example, and Im not sure what sort of mpg I can expect on the motorway consistently from them.

michelles 98 clio 1.4 rt (8v) does 200 miles to £20 of petrol, is comfy and has leccy windows and so on, we picked hers up from the auction with 75000 on the clock for £700

I'd go for the golf 1.9tdi. Mate had the same engine in an ibiza and it was quite good fun to drive, even caning it about it still done 40+MPG, sensible driving saw 50+ easy, she used to use it to go to Wales and back every weekend from Essex .

I know you're not a fan of Vauxhall's Dave, but have you ever driven an Omega? Nice cars to drive, Vauxhall were always able to build decent RWD motors. The Omega TD has a BMW engine in it anyway. Fully loaded and would make a very good family car.

I dont mind the omega, but a car that size is not going to be as economical as a smaller one. Abi will have her own car for hauling the kids around.

Thats pretty much what I had for a short list, estate models for me, I spent about 3 months looking and gave up, not able to find a good example in my price range.

stretch your budget ever so slightly and buy my LPG 728, you get almost 50 mpg on petrol let alone on LPG.

not sure if you can get a 318d 320 all in e36 they do an 325 diesel though.

example, although i have seen some cheaper

Maybe an ex minicab a toyota or something like that on LPG. Something like a 1997-1998 reg. I t might be a high miler but could save you loads of cash fit 5 people in and get you from A-B cheaply. Or something like this with a few quid left to fix anything wrong.
