F.A.O Jeff TT, Auto box probs

Hiya bud , just wanted to pick ya brains about an autobox problem , i replaced my last autobox about a year ago , it had a slipping 2nd gear clutch pack but it als had a strange quirk of when starting the car up , usually after being stood overnight or all day , i would put it in drive , try to pull off but it would be in third gear ???? switch off and re-start , it would flash the power light but not a definate fault code , in drive again and it would be perfect apart from the slipping clutch pack .

Now after replacing the box with a low mileage and really smooth box , it,s started doing the third gear thing again , switch off and re-start sometimes a few times before it sort of re-sets itself and performs perfectly .

Now could this be being caused by something else rather than an actual problem with the box ? , just seems very strange to have this happen with two different boxes .

Could a worn or faulty T.P.S cause any issues as it also connects to the auto box ?.

Any body else had this happen ?

Cheers Allan

Hi Allan,

The gearbox has its own ecu and could possibly have a problem with that or the connector to it, agree its is odd how the same symptoms are showing on two different boxes, the tps would not cause this fault however, the autobox does have a fail safe where it can select 3rd gear to get you home as such when a fault occurs

Check the connector under the bonnet on the drivers side close to the headlight this are the interface between box and ecu.

Try an autobox diagnostic see if an codes are stored, follow the link below how to do this.

If you want can send you a spare ecu for the box to try, post back any codes etc.

Cheers
