Hi everyone,

Am new to to 300zxs, and new to turbo engines, having always had NA cars before.

Am in the market to buy one however.

Went to view a car tonight, and the boost was sat on 0 at idle, not on -14 (well the gauge read -7 to +7) as the buyers guide says it should.

It also seemed to be missing slightly, and running a bit rich (smell of petrol from exhaust fumes).

I take I should walk away from this and look elsewhere?

Most likely Boost Gauge not connected. Oftens gets disconnected when people fit (and perhaps since removed) aftermarket boost gauges or Boost controllers, and the pipe can get dislodged when working on the car.

If you have concerns then I would walk, never view the first one you see anyway. There are a lot of bad examples out there, its best to get an idea of the good and the bad before handing over your cash.

Yeah i thought it might not be connected, but it was moving when revving the car at idle, went up whilst revving and down on underrun.

I think I will keep on looking!

the boost gauge is suppost to move when you rev in netrol,

goes to the - direction on rev,

then on boost, goes to the +

thats no issue really, get an aftermarket one to check it correctly tho.

does it "boost" above 3k revs?

these are old cars, your not going to find a perfect one. dont be put off from some nigly issues :)

I was trying to follow the buyers guide, specifically that on idle the boost gauge should be far over to the left. Are you saying that thats not really an important factor?

I don't know because as I said I;ve no experience of turbo'd cars.

The boost should go to 0 when you turn the car on, start it and it should go to a notch or so above the -7 (or -14 for uk) . When you accelerate the boost needle will raise, this is the turbo's spooling up, once the gauge goes into the + then the turbo's are providing boost. Manual cars will boost a bit slower than auto's due to the slightly different internals in the turbos. This was done to help compensate for the autobox.
