When importing parts from the US is there anyway of knowing or working out just how much import tax and additional charges i would be forced to pay when receiving my items.

I know its sometimes just a chance you take , sometimes you can get away without being charged others your not so lucky but ive heard people saying that if you get the sender to mark on it as being a gift or marking the value down then you're more likely to get away with it, is this true , or is there any other ways around it.

I dont want to spend a couple thousand dollars then get hit with monster import fees to collect from local post office.

Budget for 22% for Import tax, vat and admin charges on the total cost including delivery charge.

Sending as Gift only works below 17pound. If the sender marks the value down as lower than that will reduce the costs but if its gets lost or damaged in delivery then they only pay out the given value.
