Evening All,

 

As this week-end comes closer to the end. Would anyone(s) be able to shed some light relating to turbo failure symptoms. My main question being: Can turbos fail without giving any smoke through the exhaust, and typical tell-tell signs.. If so..can you notice this by the way the turbo sounds under load

whilst driving the car and will performace be affected?

Noise increase is a sign, grinding type of noise also. Power loss, temp of the turbo, lag increase, not able to hit full boost.

I have a nissan 300zx twin turbo, 5 speed manual. I am currently experiencing power loss which has been progressive the more I drive the car. It's more around the first turbo stage, as after I hit 40 mph and move throught to 3rd gear..the power curve is alot better but still not as good as before. I believe I can hear a slight low pitched sound from the turbo's through acceleration and deceleration.

Although, I am losing no oil, there is no smoke..I am slightly confused to why this would occur?

Also from monitoring my boost gauge, the turbos seem to be spooling up fine...Saying that even if i tap the accelerator the first turbo from the gauge seems to reach o from -17 quite quickly..does that mean anything?

This could also indicate a leak, have a look around the engine bay for splits in pipes and loose hose clips.

By far the quickest way to find a leak is by way of a vacuum leak test - search is your friend.

You can make your own if your able...

Does your boost gauge go above 0 on full throttle?

 

If it does not then one of your turbos has seized. It is possible for them to seize and not smoke.

 

Oh, and both turbos spool up at the same RPM, they are parallel operation not the sequential type like in the toyota supra MK4 (or mazda RX7)...

Thanks for the advice lads, going up to dunk300zxtt point regarding boost on full throttle reaching above zero. My zed isnt doing that, so I am hoping it is just a boost leak.I have sent my car to the engineering company that built it. So hopefully they will come back with the all clear regarding the turbos. The owner who built the car has said to be over the phone today that a turbo issue is highly unlikely...we shall wait and see!!

So you're saying your boost gauge does not go above zero on full throttle?

Sorry mate I wasn't very clear, in neutral and the car is idling it doesnt but on full throttle it does.

Well if your gauge moves above zero on full throttle it seems like your turbos are working as they should.

 

Look for boost leaks, make yourself a boost leack detector (do a search) as it will make things a lot easier.
