Hello.

Seriously considering buying an automatic 300zx with th intention to turn it into a manual in the future.

But my problem ....... ive never drove an automatic and was wonderign exactly how.lol

On the twin turbo zed, do both turbos have to kick in before it changes gear or can you change gear without the turbos coming in? Does it cost abit more cash wise on petrol if the turbos are always kicking in before changing gear?

Some help please for the auto boxes out there:rofl:

you can drive them off boost to save fuel if you wish. Cruise control is a godsend on the motorways with all the friggin speed cameras about just set your cost and no worries. If you wish to floor it they have a nice kickdown and off to go. I have often though of a manual but like the laziness of an auto. if the box does packup one day then it would have to be a conversion to manny

The automatic gear change is completely separate with relation to the turbos.

It changes gear according to engine revs/throttle position, for example a full throttle will make the car rev much higher before a gear change because the computer is assuming you want to make rapid progress. Where as part throttle will make the computer assume you are having a steady ride and change gear much sooner. The turbos have nothing to do with it. Don't think about it too much, just select D for Drive and use the throttle and brake to your liking, the car and computers do the rest.

As for buying an auto, I bought a really good example of an auto then converted it. As apposed to buying a shed like manual. If you can buy an excellent manual though, do that. If you find an excellent auto at a great price then I would buy & convert. But it would have to be excellent.

the auto i am looking it is not bad, needs cosmetic work done to it and new windscreen.

the owner has said he feels 3rd gear isnt right as when having the foot down sometimes in 3rd gear it revs up then the speed catches up with it. So this is why i was thinking on possibly buying with the intention of a manual conversion.

Any ideas how much this would cost for a conversion?

just checked zedworld, says £1650 for a conversion...is it just me or does that seem pricy?

awrite...full service with that aswell, sounds better now i guess.lol.

so anyways....the auto i am looking it is not bad, needs cosmetic work done to it and new windscreen.

good idea or bad idea to buy?

If i had a manual gearbox would i just need to buy a clutch and shifter to be fitted? How much you reckon in labour it would cost to have done if i got all the parts?

The car you are talking about sounds like a knackered old shed tbh. Worth it for less than 1k I guess if you want to spend 3k on it to get it up to scratch, or you could just buy a tidy manual for 4k.

I was thinking that but without any more details of the car I can't comment.

However, if you want a manual then buy a manual that needs work rather than an auto that needs work. After all you will still have the extra cost of the conversion after you have fixed everything else to get it to your liking.

If that makes sense........

...........Only buy an auto if the car is sound to begin with; then you will only have the cost of the conversion later when your funds permit.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

That includes a brand new 25% uprated clutch and EITHER a new balanced single piece propshaft or brand new support bearing (option)

one thing you have to keep in mind is the kick down switch with the auto floor it and it will drop a few cogs and wake the twins into a full blown frenzy, when flooring in a auto make sure you have a straight road ahead if your not used to it, apart from that i only swaped my auto box for manual as it buggerd up asnd was the cheaper option i really enjoyed the auto

I would like a manual that needs some work to be honest but cant seem to find a reasonably priced on i think.

Im not really 100% about this car. Only thing making me want it is its close to me and appears not to be to much needing done to it after a spray hear and there and a manual conversion. And also the fact ive never drove an auto neither.

I dont know what to do:|!!

Anyone got a manual out there.lol

your kidding right lol

kidding about what?

i have a manual that needs work doing to the engine, and for what its got done to it so far is very cheap lol, also an engine replacement is cheaper than a manual conversion and it doesnt need a respray as the bodywork is fantastic

Yes.........but what is yours like underneath with rust? plus i cant drive your car at the moment tho can i. your also £££ away and so is zedworld.lol. If your brought all that into your current price i would think about it.

Also.........your back tyres, does the top of them sit flush with the rear arches or does it go inside it? I still dont know if your car would get over the speed bumps i now have in my area where as this auto would by the looks of things.

tyres sit just inside of the arches, underside of my car is solid (any rust has been removed and replaced, a prob that can occur even on an import), i havent had any probs whatsoever with speed bumps, also the drive-im using the car at the moment and all i get as a bit noise higher up the rev range, how far away from me are you, maybe worth a look, will even put it up on ramps so you can have a look underneath of ya like ( ihave nothing to hide)

I am 3hours away from your....so basically if i made the effort to go that far chances where i would be buying it. I just wouldnt want to part with that much cash without the bmw gone, where as i could manage this auto with the cash.

How does your car sound? how high are the bumps at your area?

Would you mind;

a. taking a picture of the wheels at the rear arch

b. measuring the height of the front bumper from the ground

c. taking a picture of the speedbumps you go over by any chance.lol.

clearly need to do my homeowrk before traveling that kind of distance.

hes looking for 1750 but would prefer to pay less with the niglay bits thats wrong with it.

how much is the auto...?
:smash:

you still havent got back to me about your car.lol:nelson:

sorry mate have got about 10 mins a day to myself at the moment 2 pubs is killing me.....will get some photos sent as soon as i can.. but impartial advise:-

mine was auto when i bought it and t the time didnt know to much about autos till it went wrong,2nd and third felt a little strange after a few months then one day no gears...o.oh.

had the auto box replaced at zedworld (brilliant service thanks to jeff and jamie)..but a month down the road that auto box died too(NO FAULT OF ZEDWORLD),anyways i took the plunge and had the manual conversion and never looked back worth every single penny manual is sooooooooo much more fun and reliable anyway moral of the story buy a MANUAL....!!
