How many gears does the Autobox have on the ZX TT..

is it 3 + Overdrive which = 4??

What speeds should each gear change at?.. provided it is in "NORMAL" anybody know?

Finally, the reason for which I am asking, is my car for some unknown reason doesn't seem to change to 3rd?.. it is building up speed, then just revving when I get round 40-50mph.. then once you hit like.. 5k rpms it pulls again and u get power.. but it's revving quite high...and doesnt seem as if its changed inbto 3rd gear yet..

I have checked the autobox fluid levels, they seem to be fine, they even smell like they should...

What could be the problem?.. line pressures? any thoughts?

thanks in advance

Dre

Sounds like the box is on its way out!

And i thought it was 3 Gears and if you have overdrive selected it goes into 4th? Don't quote me on that though!

It's not making any grinding noises, or any of the other symptoms in the other threads. Just wont go into 3rd, and when it does it's very high up the rev range. The thing that annoys me the most, is that you get no warnings with these cars, they just suddenly get a problem instantly, it isn't as if you can diagnose something starting to happen.

How much are Manual Conversions these days?..

Also, I have seen an Auto box for sale.. for £200.. from clownpants.. but.. say no more.

Anywho, anymore advice guys?..

Tried turning overdrive off and going from 2nd to 3rd??? But yea its like you said, they do just go like that! :(

Yup most likely foobared autobox fella, can try chaning the auto oil and cleaning up the filter, but at best you'll only get a few hundred more miles out of it, very comon fault im sorry to say.

i had the same situation just after crimbo but my autobox decided to blow all its internals all over the driveway...its now a manual which is loads better....can be costly to do a manual conversion i spent 1500 on the conversion alone,

Sounds like the box is on its way all right. I have rebuilt loads of these and most of the time it is down to poor line pressure a this in turn allows the clutch plates to slip over time and when they go they usually lose the higher gears first before complete self-destruct.

If it were an electronic failure then you would have symptoms like not changing gear at all, pulling away in 2nd etc also flashing diagnostic light on the dash.

hope this helps.

and while its a 4 speed box it can feel like 5 changes if you notice these things. This is because when the lock up clutch operates on light throttle after about 40mph the revs drop again as the converter slip is gone.

I had exactly the same symptoms matey, so got shut, fitting my manwell conversion at the mo, just got the final parts off the postman, yay! Gutting, but not the end of the world, and yeah, it is a pain in the arrse as they do tend to 'just go' with no warning!....

Thanks very much for all the advice guys! - It's really very much appreciated, Oh the trials and tribulations of a Z owner :-/

When something like this goes wrong with a car it's always very tempting to just say Sod it! and sell it!

But this is the car i've always wanted, I just hope the Manual conversion is gonna be the end to all my woes!.. Are the Manuals on Z's anygood? lol.. They aren't prone to braking down, or super heavy clutches? lol.. Also, who is the best person to get the conversion done by?.. I'm assuming Jeff??

Have you also tried the autobox diagnostics explained in the online workshop manual?

There is always the replacement autobox route. I was able to get one that was reported to have been fully rebuilt and so far it does seem to have been an excellent box.

The original on my UK TT lasted 140k miles

i recall a solenoid somewhere in the wheel arch which jeff tt said causes all sorts of auto box probs...do a search for his posts all may not be lost :D

deffinately worth goin the manual route. manual boxes are bullet proof and the car feels so much more responsive and quicker as a manual.

Yeah, It makes sense to look for something electronic, but I have tried driving it in 2nd then dropping it into D, in an attempt to get it to go into 3rd.. Overdrive still works... it's just not making the switch over to 3rd and the higher gears.. :(

I'll have to send jeff a msg about this solenoid, unless anyone else knows anything?

I know the manual route seems like the only way forward, but it's alot of money which I wont get back, although I will have my Z in perfect order.. It's an awkward situation, possibly the worst.. it really irritates me :(

Hey, thanks very much Uno, i've had the car Apart, cleaned the Solenoid out and tested it, was reading 13ohms, so it's within range. Just done another diagnostics test, got 10 flashes now lol... It's saying "Line Pressure Solenoid"

What is this one?.. can I access it and could somebody give me some information on it please..

Thanks!

cheers m8, i'll keep it in mind, i'm just tryin to go through all the possible electrical / solenoid faults first.. before I fork out for another auto box .. any info on line pressure solenoids would still be useful from anyone reading this thread! :D
