Hey all just thought should mention had the Z in for it's M.O.T the other day and she failed :(

not to bad though i think :o

This is how it reads from the M.O.T Test

* offside front brake pipe excessively corroded

* (all full length and rear brake pipes excessively corroded)

*Parking brake lever has no reserve travel

(new about this one though)

+service brake efficiency below requirements’

+see note - (braking performance not tested- as pipes excessively corroded)

I also got a few advisory items, but nothing major however i knew nothing of most of the work needed above and after speaking to the garage that tested the Z, and- (Jeff and Mike at MJP) it's not the hardest of job's but not the easiest either!, more an issue of gaining access to the area needed :(

However just as an after thought i took the Z to the garage that had changed the front brake pads a few days prior!! as the tester did not seem to really want the job and with having no ramps or allot of space at home wanted to see what they thought

( i had a 25-min conversation with one of the guy's there on the initial visit) about the Z range and a few other choice Jap coupe's & cruiser's , turns out he'd worked on a fair few Z32's!!

anyway back on topic… he had a look himself after being slightly miffed that a 03 import had failed on excessive corrosion, turn's out it's not excessive in the least! and in 3 people's separate opinion now will only need wire brushing and treating, and there should then be no issue's what so ever for a re-test

So hopefully a good result !

Started off dreading this was going to be a around a £500.00 job !! now should be looking at around £70.00 max !, don’t think I’ll make it for the re-test period though so will have to go through another test !

Anyone else had any similar issues???

as long as you remember, brakes may at one point save your life, dont try and do what i did and clean them up, luckily mine went when i was going extremely slow, make sure you remove all the clamps and bracxkets holding them on as thats the place they will likely go the most as crap builds up in them

Mine failed on pretty much the same things! Ended up with a nice bill. £500 for brake pipes. £200 for new discs and pads.

Good news that yours isn't all that bad in the end though hey! Lucky bugger lol

Thanks for that mate ;) and a fair point 2 !!, i'll make sure this is checked by the garage that will be doing the work

Alan, has made me think twice though , I don’t think any of the people that have looked at them have removed any clamps or bracket's, will certainly mention this as said i don’t want to be taking chance's when it comes to brake's. I hope i can at least do this as a temp fix, with the intention to renew the lot a little further down the line if needed!

Chris :)

you can get away with dropping the diff off to get to the abs unit at the rear, not as bad as removing the whole rear subframe as some does

just be very carefull, as said, mine looked ok after the clean up and grease, it went a few months later, im lucky as just a few days earlier, i was showing a potential buyer the power and speed of a zed, could have been far worse than it was

Mine failed on the bake pipes last month as well.......:(

Luckily it's with Jeff at the moment being repaired......

.........I should be collecting it this Saturday.....:)

Richard:D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

If they dont need doing mate, get em cleaned up and treated and take it elsewhere for its MOT. It seems to me that the tester has not looked close enough!

It's in very good hands ;), spoke to Jeff about mine and am still debating taking it there (should) they all need replacing, despite the distance i'd be happier if it was there !

who did you take it to chris

It was only a small garage in rectors lane sandycroft?

only took it there as heard they where good but still only 39.99, i did see Mark Zx though so bonus :)

My garage had said even from what he can see it did not seem excessive !, but i really want it properly checked now i will certainly go for the cheaper option provided it's safe:eek:

In a way i'm glad that's all it failed on i've had worse :o

Yep was well chuffed mate, and glad it's out of the way for another year

nice one, hope they checked behind the brackets for ya

top job bud

Yeah mate, i made sure they checked mate after what you said and kind of stated it to him as if it was a mess under there i did'nt want them just tarted up, so hope it now should be a bit more than a temp fix. :D
