all my problems this week seem to be oil related.....i recently changed the oil in my 300 and not really wanting to use mobil 1 because a couple of years ago they got a very bad reputation in motorsport...a freind told me to opt for the new mobil 1 motorsport oil as it was supposed to be better than the normal mobil 1...and slightly thicker....well since putting this oil in the car i am getting a rattle from the engine until the engine is up to temperature...all i want to know is has anyone else used this oil, if so does your engine rattle?.............i am thinking of changing it for valvoline oil pretty soon....expensive engine flush i hear you say.....

cheers......"J"

I just put mobil 1 motorsport because I had a top end rattle for 1 or 2 seconds on a morning startup. puting the new oil hasnt made much difference. I think fitting new lifters is the real solution if it sounds really bad.

Try a thicker oil.

I've been using Mobil1 5W-something and had

that rattle every morning. After changing to

Redline 10W-40 the rattle went away.

I have just changed from 0-50 oil to mobil 1 motorsport(15-40) and it seems to make the engine alot quieter, especily in the morning start up. Sometimes the lifters still get stuck though. But definatly better.

mobil 1 mororsport is 15/50.....or 15/40...so if anything i think the oil is too thick until it gets warmed up a bit....i too use to have a rattle at start up but that has gone completely.....i think i will try a thinner oil........and have a comprimise.......

I've always used Magnatec for advanced modern engines. Used it in 2 out of 3 of my turbo cars...never had so much as a rattle from the engine bays. Will be using this in my 300 when I finally get it back. Anyone got any qualms about using Magnatec in 300's???

spotted a black 300zx near bangor on the weekend was it you timmy...?

Jizz,

You're in Barmouth aren't yer??? Your mate emailed me. No, not me matey, my car has only seen home about twice since I bought it. He's been long term sick since December but I should get it back soon.

I've seen a black one round Bangor and Llandudno, also a nice red TT in Menai on Anglesey. Always pass it on the way to Golf. Not fair though, that means at least two red ones in my area.

What have you got???

Tim, I used magnatec in my TT...it's ok for daily driving, but I noticed that if you drive the car hard for a while, the oil-pressure drops significantly with Magnatec.

I first thought my oil-pressure sender was going senile, but I'm now using Castrol RS 10W60 and the problem is gone..

Overall oil pressure is much higher now then what it was with Magnatec.

timmy turbo......i have got a 91 tt in metalic black....have been your way only a couple of times.....although my freinds up your way have seen both black and a red one......on the oil front i have decided to opt for a 5/50...or a 10/60......either valvaline or casrol rs..........will let everyone know if it does the trick......

I use mobil 1 15/50 and it has cured my initial lifter noise on startup.

The engine sounds very quite on cold start and at normal temperature.

Castrol magnatec is not a fully synthetic oil and is probably okay for normal driving. As Eric says above it probably isn't up to maintaining good oil pressure under heavy load.

If you want Castrol then go for the RS fully synthetic.

Cheers guys, you've convinced me...

When I get me wheels back I'll slap some Castrol RS in and see what happens.
