just a couple of questions as im getting my engine rebuilt soon, how many miles do i run it in for? what revs to go to? what else is involved in running in an engine?

Featured Replies

Not sure mate, however I would think that it would be a standard run in i.e 500miles or so at 3k or less.

wouldn't it be best to ask the people who are rebuilding the engine for you so it stays in warranty etc....?

the advice i was given by the chap who rebuilt mine was 500 miles with crap oil off boost below 3k. oil change for slightly better, then 500 miles below 4k. then oil change then 1k miles below 4k with a bit of boost. then oil change then 1k miles below 5k with stock boost. then oil change then it should be done

The guy who re-bored my block, said that (non-specific to Zeds) I should drive it below 4000rpm for between 500 and 1000 miles, using crappy 'running in oil', then put ya good stuff in............ Probably no use to ya is this info, but ya never know :-)

There is a big debate about how to run engines in.

Going from a steddy less than 3krpm for the first 500 miles all the way up to rev the nuts off it as soon as you start it up to bed in the pistons.

You should run it in as advised by your mechanic who is doing the rebuild.

I would do the first oil & filter change after 100 miles, then 500 miles, then 1000 miles.

The whole point of running an engine in is to minimise the friction between the moving parts. The most friction should come straight after the build, so as the metal grinds against metal (not as drastic as that) you want to be flushing away the greese and tiny metal filings that may have been collected in your oil.

blimey, that's 3000 miles before opening it up fully!

and every one of them dragged mate believe me :(

theres a point on my journey to work where i pull out from a T-junction onto a busy 50mph road, so id have to wait until i saw a gap or slow moving car, pull out, watch the boost gauge as i applied my throttle to make sure i wasnt on boost, then holding the throttle lightly down at that spot id watch my rev counter until i hit 3000, then i could change up into 2nd and do the same again...

...all this time there's a bloody great cement lorry baring down on me expecting me to floor it - you could even see the shadow of it falling over the car as im matching the accelleration of a push-bike. im glad to say those miles are behind me now!

just thrash the feck out of it to begin with then take it easy for 500miles. Theres no need for running in these days apart from bedding in the honing of the bores which happens in the first few mins.

Just use the car as normal.

Good oil from the start. drive sensible for first couple of hundred miles but use the engine.

All this no boost and low revs isnt the case now days.

If your in any question ask a pro who does this for a living mate.

Daz.
