Ok my electric fan packed up earlier, the first time it was the fan controller so i had my mechanic wire it up so its on full time.When i finished work i went on a nice little drive to the pub and noticed the temperature getting a bit higher than average and i didnt think much of it as its been very hot today! so on the way back it started to to get to 90 degrees give or take a few so i pulled over and turned her off getting a bit worried and then put the ignition on and i cant hear no fan? popped the bonnet only to see coolant bubbling outa the pipes! (started panicking by now) let her cool down a few hours before picking her back up and limping her home...Anyway i have a viscous fan which i was intending on replacing the electric one with but havnt got around to it as of yet! but i have a aftermarket koyo rad and a lightened crank pulley, so can the viscous just be bolt straight on to the pulley or is it not that straight forward??

Anyone? wanna get this sorted by tomorrow as i was planning on attending a meet and i was looking forward to it!:cry:

Is it definately the fan itself that has packed up? Check the connections. Also - what has your mechanic wired it into? Is it fused? If so check the fuse.

Yes matey, bolt it back on to the coupling. I had a lecky fan, and did not cool enough, put the viscous back on and all was good.

The fan bolts onto the water pump pulley not the crank pulley so no problem :)

The fan shroud won't fit properly with that radiator but I never fitted mine and it's been OK

Nope, it defeats the object of having it then. The Electric fan ( in place of the viscous) should only come on when it's needed.

Problem now solved, i took chrisC's advice and bolted the viscous onto the waterpump pulley after ripping out and binning the kenlowe shite leccy fan, while doing that i found a split in my top hose!! but lucky for me i already had some stainless replacement pipes sitting in my bedroom for months! so an hour later she was running perfect again and the temp stayed between 70 and 80 all day with the viscous what a difference it made! If anybody is considering fitting a leccy fan dont bother the standard fan is more than man enough for the job as it proved to me today, very very hot,giving it some beans,no fan shroud fitted and still perfect temperature control, well chuffed.

its just bolted onto the crank? or does the weight of the fan use the power

The force required to turn it takes power away from the wheels.

It's a power saving too far if you ask me so stick with the viscous unit unless you can afford a very big electric unit.

Even electric ones use power by putting more load on the alternator and making that harder to turn.

You can't get something for nothing.

Turn on a big audio amp and watch your revs drop!
