I drove to the shops & when I came out it just wouldn't start.

I had the breakdown guys come out, he gave it a few tries cleaned up my spark plugs & then gave up & towed me home. I've had my immobiliser checked & bypassed but that's not it either... anyone got any ideas?

The starter motor sounds fine it just doesn't fire,, it sounds like it wants to, it grunts a litlle but never picks up.

Sounds like the PTU has gave up, does it have aluminium fins on it? It is on the left hand side next to the temp sensors under the rubber piping for the intercooler! Can you hear the starter motor going?

man how many times is this sort of post coming about latelty :(

the cars are shit for the PTU & water temp sensor connections getting corroded on the front,

thats the usual reply your going to get.

mine has messed up now my engine is flooded to bits.

try an ECU diagnostic check, (very easy & helpfull feature)

Cool, I'll see if I can spot fins on the PTU as Murt said.

Z32 I was gonna try that but the ecu reader my mate had doesn't have the 300 in it  If anyone local can help let me know pls I'm near croydon

the ECU self diagnosis itslef!

you wind it anti-clockwise, keep it there for 2 seconds, wind it all the way back, then it flashes a certain amount of times.

count the flashes then check what the code it.

the link has just been posted above for you :duffer:

Ok so I ran the diagnostic & got a 13 returned 'The Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor circuit is open or shorted (abnormally high or low voltage is registered)'. So according to the page I need to check the Harness and connector for the Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor.

My next question is where do I find these?? I had a look at the online manual but can't find it in there I can only see the thermostat, water pump etc, not the actual harness or sensor locations.

look on the front of the engine,

there are 2 pipes that go to the radiater,

there are 2 connections on the metal pipes of the engine.

the yellow one is the one, you need to clean the connections to the sensor,

but also the one that the 2 wires go to the yellow connector.

mine was all green and smelly, i had to cut the yellow connector off, strip the 2 wires then connect.

make sure u remember which wire goes to which prong on the sensor

Thans dude, I tried that, but it didn't work.

Admittedly I could have done a better job cleaning the contacts on that yellow bit, but I gave them a good scrape & got most of that green crap off, and I striped the wires back a bit & reconnected those too. But I'm still getting the same code

i had this,

there is loads of green gunk in the yellow connector itself,

make a note of which wire goes to which prong (there are 2)

then cut the yellow connector off completly, itl be full of the green stuff.

then cut the plastic off the wire to get fresh metal, then put them on the prongs on the sensor.

i used speaker spades to connect them onto the prongs. works now :)

Hey, just to let you know I used your trick with the speaker connectors & it worked a treat, I got a code 55 back after that. It still wouldn't start but I went through a few of the old threads (including your one actually), & figured it was flooded. After cleaning 4 of the spark plugs pulling the fuel pump fuse & turning it over a couple of times I put the plugs back in & hey presto, just like nothing was ever wrong. :hyper:

Thanks a lot for your help on this!!

minter im glad to hear it!

isnt it suprising how terrible the connections get with japanese gunk!

iv sorted mine, but still isnt starting, but i havent dried the spark plugs yet,

how wet were yours?

my cars going to the garage as i havent got the correct size socket to remove the plug :smash:

We should have a sticky thread on PTU failure in warm weather and advice on series 1 & 2 units.

This happens every year as soon as summer arrives

To be honest the spark plugs weren't very wet at all but it seemed to be a commom suggestion so thought I'd give it a go. Jammed a screwdriver in to hold the throttle open whilst I was cleaning them too as that was also suggested, can't remember why (something about letting air get in somewhere to help dry it out), that was only for about 20 mins then I threw it all back together.

Shame you have to send yours to the garage but to be fair it was completely by chance I had the tool. I used to have a CRX & somebody wrote me off a few years ago, I scraped the car but kept the little tool kit, amazingly it had one in there. Might be worth checking ebay for a tool, will take longer but may be a fair bit cheaper.
