The main road to the close that I live in was quite nicely surfaced. Smooth, not shiny, a grippy road that looked pretty reasonable with no cracks or lifting tarmac. I came home yesterday and to my horror saw road workers taping up the man hole covers and drains. I knew instantly that they were going to be spraying tar down and throwing 500 tons of gravel on it!

It was a nice sunny afternoon, so took the Z out thinking that they would probably be spraying grit down later on in the afternoon (after rush hour...which would seem sensible). So came back from my mate's house at 5.30 and found the 'mobile roadworks' sign! Oh no I thought.

I got the Z home at a lowly 5mph with a huge queue of traffic behind me with what felt like a quarry under my tyres. (wheels have now been de-mounted and the tread jet washed)…..but I daren’t go out again. Sure, I’m a bit anal about car cleanliness, but that’s not the main consideration. You get some monkey who doesn’t give a stuff about his car flying past ignoring the 10mph limit and the front of your car gets shot blasted. There’s no avoiding it. It’ll be there for months!

But my question is 'why?'. A road that was in good condition needed no work carried out on it what so ever. I know that grit refacing is a cheap fix for 'local' roads that have a poor surface (even still, it's a miserable practice). So why was a road that leads to housing in a quiet part of the town that was in good condition (not even a slippy/polished surface) should need ANY work at all? It's just a complete and utter waste of tax payer's money.

The grit will be around for months now as it's not a busy road.

I called Somerset County Council to ask why they thought the road was necessary to be refaced and turned into a long gravel driveway. The response I got was one of retardedness as no one seemed to know and that the planning team get information from the highways agency. It's a minor road to a housing development. Not a main road, it doesn't go anywhere, it looked a fairly recent lay as well. Apparently, so it would appear, they automatically get refaced every 10 years and it had appeared on the data base from a separate department managed by the Highways Agency. So surely, you'd have thought that the council would have sent round the planning officer for a 5 minute gander before throwing £10k at it. But no, it was automatically scheduled. What a complete waste of tax payers money and a complete mess it's left.

It's all about Budget, if they don't spend it they don't get the same next year.

There are other roads that are actually in need of work that need attention though. If they wanted to spend the money correctly, there are plenty of places that require it.

Well i moved away and came back to possibly the worst pavements ever, they'd used recycled tarmac to cover them but instead of doing them properly they'd just slapped it on with a trowel from what i could see.

As you walk on it you wobble all over the place. Total rubbish and they've done the whole town in it which is even worse.

It honestly looks like they've laid it on by hand without thinking :(

True but harsh , and maybe not in the best interests of harmony in the club .

It`s lost in the ether of deleteism now , Mr David . I know deletedness would probably be more correct , but elitism and all that makes it seem more apt . I wonder , yet I don`t fooking care . LOL

Hello , stranger ! How`re you doing ? :D

You know me, living the dream, drinking and whoring, popping and locking.

I trust all's well with you.

Yes all is good , my friend . I suspect you`re keeping the dark side from us : domesticity and all that . I hope the wife and bairn are well , your completely understandable needs and habits notwithstanding :p

:rofl::rofl:

" I must say, that represents a level of hypocrisy in you that I'd previously suspected, but not noticed due to your highly evasive skills "

" The greatest decade in the history of mankind is coming to an end and as Presuming Ed here has so consistently pointed out, we have failed to paint it black "

Sorry , I`ll stop now ! :nono:
